Я все ещё здесь, душа моя! Но собираюсь дня через два уехать. Не поверишь, как мне Грустно расставаться с своей милой, тихой, одинокой Villa Richelieu. Если б я был богат, то, конечно, приобрёл бы себе этот успокоительный, чудесный приют. Продолжаю заниматься, и опера все понемножку подвигается. Когда-то настанет чудная минута, когда можно будет сказать: аминь! Оркестровку я уже не считаю за работу; это приятное и совершенно спокойное времяпровождение.

С живейшим интересом прочёл я историю твоего неудачного пьянства. Я припоминаю, что хотя не в такой степени, но тебе случалось и прежде иногда напиваться неудачно, т. е. слишком внезапно. Помнишь нашу поездку втроём с Кашкиным в Кунцево года два тому назад? Тем не менее казус довольно неприятный. Зато уж воображаю, как ты теперь месяца два будешь вести себя не укоризненно. Позволяю тебе не пить до моего приезда, но зато, когда буду в Москве, нужно будет непременно хоть один раз стариной тряхнуть. А уроком ты воспользуйся и узнай ценой нескольких синяков, что нельзя налегать сразу на вино, а понемножку.

Здесь совсем весна. Тепло, весело, а два дня тому назад над нашими головами разразилась страшная гроза. Что-то у нас в России будет весной! Пойдёт ли чёрная смерть разгуливать по при вольным нашим равнинам или застрянет там, где она теперь? Здесь в газетах уверяют, что русские официальные известия ложны и что чума свирепствует, а народ бунтует и убивает докторов; даже целая история рассказана, как были убитыб докторов в Ветлянке. Это, очевидно, басня. Признаюсь, что ''у нас'' за границей вообще считают дозволенным врать про Россию все, что угодно.

Пожалуйста, душа моя, при свидании спроси Рубинштейна, получил ли он письмо, которое я написал ему 1-го января!
