Ты спрашиваешь, буду ли я в Петербурге? Благоразумие заставляет меня решить этот вопрос отрицательно. Во-первых, денег у меня на поездку нет, а во-вторых, как нарочно, на праздники сюда приезжает Берлиоз и даёт здесь один общедоступный концерт и один вместо 4-го собрания Музыкального общества. Придётся отложить поездку до масленицы или до поста. Лизавете Михайловне скажи, что, как только будут деньги, пришлю. Кто из Вас двух был дома, когда Рубинштейн приезжал, ты или Модест, и как он Вам понравился?

Ларош живёт по случаю болезни у нас. Это значительно повлияло на мой образ жизни; я стал чаще сидеть дома по вечерам.

5 декабря был у нас правоведский обед, довольно весёлый (я сидел рядом с Сорохтиным); омрачён он был выходкой товарища председателя окружного суда (Арсеньев), к[ото]рый хотел было говорить [об] его пререканиях с адвокатом Урусовым, вследствие чего большинство так сильно протестовало, что произошло нечто вроде скандала. «Танцы» мои имели здесь большой успех; Юргенсон даже собирается напечатать их аранжировку в четыре руки. Из Петербурга я получил словесную просьбу их прислать, но послал сказать, что отдам их не иначе, как получив официальное за подписью всех директоров отношение. Заремба через Рубиншт[ейна] велел мне передать, что я таковое получу. Если так, то ты их услышишь. Эти подлецы слишком кавалерственно ко мне относятся; нужно плевать на них, чтобы дать почувствовать своё достоинство.

On 5 December we had a jurists' dinner, which was quite fun (I was sitting next to Sorokhtin); it was overshadowed by the antics of the chairman of the district court (Arsenyev), who wanted to talk about his quarrel with the lawyer Urusov, as a result of which the majority protested so strongly that a near scandal ensued. My "[[Characteristic Dances|Dances]]" had great success here; [[Jurgenson]] is even intending to print them in an arrangement for four hands. I received a verbal request from [[Petersburg]] to send them there, but then had word that I could only do so if there was an official notice signed off by all the directors. Zaremba informed me through [[Anton Rubinstein|Rubinstein]] that I would be receiving the same. If so, then you'll hear them. These scoundrels are much too cavalier towards me; you have to spit on them in order to feel worthy.
