Меня очень удивляет, что ты пишешь, будто не получил ответа ни на одно из твоих трёх писем.

Неужели до тебя не дошло написанное мной перед самыми праздниками длинное на 8 страницах письмо, где я объяснялся с тобой по поводу твоего предположения, что я не желаю тебя видеть? Отвечай мне на этот вопрос непременно. Насчёт твоей поездки скажу вот что.

1) Честное слово, очень, очень рад был бы тебя видеть. 2) Что касается до денег, то их у меня действительно очень мало; но это вздор, и я бы непременно тебе написал «приезжай», если бы не следующие две причины: 3) Ларош живёт у нас и занял мою комнату, так как она единственная тёплая. Я же сам теперь никакой не имею и сплю, где случится; место бы, конечно, нашлось и для тебя, но мне не хотелось бы, чтобы [ты] приехал именно в то время, когда у меня нет своего угла, где бы я мог распоряжаться по произволу и быть с тобой вместе. 4) Наконец, мне досадно, что ты не можешь быть здесь в субботу 3 февраля на концерте; если б это оказалось возможным, то все препятствия можно было бы отправить к черту.
