Just how and where I could be hidden, I don't know, but I ask you to tell [[Karlusha]] and [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]] about this. This is all the more possible because each of their concerts included excerpts from chamber music performed by the whole orchestra. Couldn't you take the trouble to do this? Сегодня утром я получил твоё милейшее письмо, а часов в ''пять'' — не менее милую и курьёзную телеграмму. Замечательно, что эта телеграмма не была ни на волос переврана, тогда как телеграммы французские всегда доходят в искажённом виде. Я очень, очень благодарен тебе за это приятное известие, к тому же сообщённое на русском языке. Но мне немножко совестно перед тобой. Ты мне посылаешь приятные известия, я же только пристаю к тебе с деньгами. Впрочем, повторяю, что этот заем я делаю независимо от всяких других обстоятельств и отдам тебе долг, наверное, не позже 1-го апреля.

Известие, что «''Онегин''» пойдёт, меня тем более обрадовало, что я решил, что по случаю смерти бедного юноши — Великого князя, он будет отменен. Желание слышать «Онегина» превозмогает мою склонность прятаться, и поэтому я решился 17-го числа непременно быть в Москве, но не иначе, как инкогнито, т. е. так, чтобы, [кроме] консерваторского тесного кружка, никто об этом не знал. I woke up today with a headache, because I drank heavily yesterday. Taking the hair of the dog at lunch wasn't enough either. The garcon handed me a newspaper in which I read a curse on myself. This merely doubled my appetite.
