Анатолий переслал мне письмо Ваше, в коем Вы заявляете о Вашем желании получить формальный развод. Очень радуюсь этому. К сожалению, я имею основание предполагать, что Вы всё-таки не вполне понимаете, в чём заключается дело, и потому сообщу Вам следующее.

1) Для бракоразводного процесса требуется законный повод, т. е. или ''прелюбодеяние одного из супругов, или неспособность''. Я согласен и на то и на другое. Предоставляю Вам выбрать тот или другой повод. Во всяком случае вину беру на себя, и вся неприятная сторона процесса будет лежать на мне.

2) Я беру на себя издержки дела, но с тем, чтобы они не превышали пяти тысяч; если потребуется больше, то остальное заплатите Вы.

3) Я соглашусь начать дело только тогда, когда из сношений с Вашим поверенным узнаю ''совершенно достоверно'', что на сей раз Вы уже серьёзно относитесь к делу. Я не могу, как в прошлом году, терять время и деньги на поездки в Москву ради того, чтобы подчиняться Вашим столь изменчивым желаниям.

4) Никаких денег Вы от меня не получите, ибо дай Бог, чтоб я мог достать те пять тысяч, которые нужны для ведения дела. Впрочем, я это сказал Вам ещё в прошлом году, после того как Вы пропустили чудесный случай отделаться от меня да ещё получить те десять тысяч, которые случайно были в моём распоряжении. Вот ещё что я бы Вам посоветовал. Не лучше ли Вам вместо того лица, которому Вы хотите дать доверенность (и про которого Вы сами мне говорили, что оно недостойно этой чести), обратиться к специальному ходатаю по делам? Сколько мне кажется, Ваш теперешний поверенный одушевлён самыми лучшими намерениями и очень хорошо понимает, что развод для Вас будет лучшим благом, — но оно [лицо], как мне кажется, мало знакомо с процедурой бракоразводных дел. Нужно, чтобы кто-нибудь Вам хорошенько разъяснил, в чём дело, а то Вы до сих пор говорите о какой-то Вашей «''снисходительности''», как будто Вы имеете право чего-нибудь с меня требовать! Мне бы хотелось, чтобы Вы вполне сознательно относились к делу, — иначе я боюсь, что потянется длинная и бесконечная канитель, одинаково томительная и для Вас и для меня.

I cannot waste time and money, like last year, on trips to [[Moscow]] for the sake of subjecting myself to your so inconstant wishes <ref name="note4"/>.

4) You will not receive any money from me at all, because God grant that I manage to raise the five thousand which are necessary to carry on the lawsuit. Besides, I told you this last year already, after you let slip a wonderful opportunity to get rid of me and in addition to obtain that sum of ten thousand which then happened to be at my disposal <ref name="note5"/>. Here is some more advice which I would like to give you. Would it not be better if, instead of that person to whom you want to give a power of attorney (and about whom you yourself told me that he was unworthy of this honour) <ref name="note6"/>, you were to turn to a professional solicitor? As far as I can tell, your current attorney is inspired by the very best intentions and understands very well that a divorce would be the greatest blessing for you, but it seems to me that he is not sufficiently familiar with the procedure that is followed in divorce suits. It is necessary that someone should explain to you properly what the matter consists in, because you are still going on about some "''condescension''" on your part, as if you were entitled to demand anything from me! I would like you to approach this matter fully aware of what you are doing, as otherwise I am afraid that the proceedings will be spun out endlessly, which would be equally wearying for you and for me.

In any case I am very, very glad that you have finally realised the full advantageousness of a divorce and the full necessity of a complete separation between us. [[Anatoly]] will gladly undertake the negotiations with your representative. If he should feel it necessary to contact me in writing, be so kind as to give him my address.
