On 1st September there was a grand annual dinner — I was drunk again (I forgot that on 30 August I dined with [[Ostrovsky]]). Classes started on 2 September; I have even more of them now then I had before. I'm so unused to doing classes and in the first lesson I became so flustered that I was forced to leave for 10 minutes, so as not to faint. I don't remember whether I met [[Apukhtin]] at the theatre on the 2nd or the 3rd. At first he didn't even want to acknowledge me, he was so angry, but after a long explanation he was eventually placated. The next day we dined together at the English Club, where after dinner he became so ill that I was terribly alarmed, but not without the presence of mind to grab him and drag him with great difficulty into the garden, where he soon recovered. He must have eaten too much of something. The next evening we went to [[Vladimir Shilovsky\|Shilovsky]]'s, where he captivated everyone with his stories. Then he went to the Shakovsky estate for a couple of days, but yesterday I saw him at the opera. This was the first performance of our Italian Opera. They did "Othello". [[Artôt]] sang charmingly, and a very good young tenor Stanio made his debut. After the opera we went to the club and had a pleasant time. Не помню 2-го или 3-го , встретился с Апухтиным в театре. Он сначала не хотел даже меня узнавать, так был сердит, — но после долгих объяснений, наконец. умилостивился. На другой день мы с ним обедали в Английском клубе, и там после обеда с ним сделалось дурно так, что я страшно перепугался, на не потерялся, схватил его и потащил с большим трудом в сад, где вскоре он оправился. Должно быть, лишнее скушал что-нибудь. Следующий вечер мы с ним были у Шиловскпх, где он пленил, всех своими рассказами. Затем он два дня пробыл в имении Шаховских, а вчера я с ним свиделся в опере. Это было первое представление нашей итальянской оперы. Давали «Отелло». Пела прелестно Арто и дебютировал очень хороший молодой тенор Станио. После оперы были в клубе и время провели приятно.
