Я получил письма от Модеста, из которого усматриваю, что он хандрит. Мне очень захотелось съездить к нему, тем более что от Низов недалеко. Если тебе это не противно, то решим так, что ты приедешь к Кондратьеву и что мы тотчас же или на другой день поедем дня на 3–4 к Модесту. Впрочем предоставляю тебе полную свободу. Модесту я написал условно, что, ''может быть'', мы приедем. Если тебе почему-либо хочется поскорей прямо к Каменку, то я съезжу к Моде позже, осенью, как и предполагал прежде. Итак, ты должен написать мне: 1) хочешь ли ехать к Модесту, 2) если да, то когда тебя ждать в Низах и 3) если не хочешь, то когда будешь в ''Киеве'', где мы с тобой должны съехаться. Т. е. съедемся мы в Ворожбе, ибо если ты мне напишешь, что такого-то числа выезжаешь из Москвы, то я пригоню так, чтоб с тобой встретиться. В случае же, если произойдёт недоразумение, та во всяком случае даю тебе ''rendez-vous'' в ''Киеве'', в гост[инице] «''Европа''». Главное имей в виду, что я отдаю себя в полное твоё распоряжение и как ты напишешь, — так я и сделаю.
