	After [[Fürstner]], I ~~receive~~ another offer the other day from some Ehrler (this time via [[Kotek]]) to compose and sell him some {{und2\|Russian dances}}!!! You see, I'm such a wonderful composer that the Germans come swarming to me with their requests for Russian dances. I wrote to [[Kotek]] that I will write what I please, and not what some Mr Ehrler wants me to, and asked him to convey this to the supplicant.		After [[Fürstner]], I received another offer the other day from some Ehrler (this time via [[Kotek]]) to compose and sell him some {{und2\|Russian dances}}!!! You see, I'm such a wonderful composer that the Germans come swarming to me with their requests for Russian dances. I wrote to [[Kotek]] that I will write what I please, and not what some Mr Ehrler wants me to, and asked him to convey this to the supplicant.

I'm not very fond of [[Rome]], and nurture the hope that [[Modest]] can be persuaded to go elsewhere; but, we'll see.		In 6 days I'm setting off for [[Rome]], where my brother [[Modest]] is already settled with his pupil. Please address me there: ''Roma. Via del Babuino. Hôtel de Russie''. I'm not very fond of [[Rome]], and nurture the hope that [[Modest]] can be persuaded to go elsewhere; but we'll see.

	My [[Piano Concerto No. 2\|concerto]] is nearing its end. Had you not embarked on a new venture then I could have orchestrated it with the speed of a Roman candle and sent it to you, but now I'm unlikely to bring it to its much-desired end before the spring, because there's no hurry. If [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]] will be playing it, then it will only be from the printed music next season.		My [[Piano Concerto No. 2\|concerto]] is nearing its end. Had you not embarked on a new venture, then I could have orchestrated it with the speed of a Roman candle and sent it to you, but now I'm unlikely to bring it to its much-desired end before the spring, because there's no hurry. Как ты ошибаешься, дружище, полагая, что я живу среди менее жестокой зимы, чем ты. В Париже стоят такие лютые морозы, в комнатах так холодно, — что, наверное, здесь от холода больше страдают, чем в Москве. Я же наслаждаюсь, ибо люблю холод и ненавижу душные, топленные комнаты в России.

На другой день после Фюрстнера я получил ещё предложение от какого-то Эрлера (на этот раз через Котека) сочинить и продать ему какие-то {{und2|pycскиe танцы}}!!! Видишь, как ко мне лезут и какой я чудный композитор, что какие-то немцы мне русские пляски заказывают. Я написал Котеку, что пишу то, что мне хочется, а не то, чего хочется какому-нибудь г. Эрлеру, и прошу его передать о том просителю.

Бедный Венявский! У меня сжалось сердце, читая известие о нем.

Через 6 дней я отправляюсь в Рим, где уже поселился мой брат Модест с своим воспитанником. Адресуй мне, пожалуйста туда: ''Roma. Via del Babuino. Hôtel de Russie''. Я не очень-то люблю Рим и лелею себя надеждой, что у дастся Модеста увлечь куда-нибудь в другое место; а впрочем увидим.

Концерт мой приходит к концу. Если ты не завёл новый порядок, то я бы мог с быстротою римской свечки инструментовать его и послать тебе, — но теперь вряд ли ранее весны приведу его к вожделенному концу, ибо торопиться нечего. Если Н[иколай] Г[ригорьевич] будет играть его, то не иначе, как печатным нотам в будущем сезоне.
