Naturally, the whole of [[Kamenka]] began to follow the twists and turns of this story with the utmost attention. Did he know how [[Tanya]] felt towards him? Did she find him too intellectually unworthy of her? what will [[Sasha]] and [[Leva]] say?

			Finally, on the evening of the third day, in the small garden, Trubetskoy made a confession to [[Tanya]] and proposed marriage. Clever ''[[Tanya\|Tanka]]'' acted surprisingly shrewdly. She told him that she wasn't in love with him, but that she was very fond of him and was prepared to marry him, but 2) she did not want to constrain him or herself, and therefore would only allow official courtship when he: a) received parental permission, and b) can arrange a secure and comfortable existence. That same evening it was decided that he would go to apply for leave and, having received it, would set off for ''[[Vevey]]'' to see his parents, whose permission he hoped to receive without difficulty, which is in doubt, as they envisaged a rich bride for him. He wanted to talk to [[Sasha]], but she rejected his approach, as she didn't want to be compromised in the event that his parents refused. Generally, both [[Sasha]] and [[Leva]] have behaved rather sympathetically to this marriage, mainly because, it seems, he brightens [[Tanya]] up considerably. You cannot imagine how ''radiant with happiness'' she is, and how dazzlingly beautiful she has become. Everyone, starting from the grandmother, is very happy and wants the marriage to take place. Everyone finds Trubetskoy to be most sympathetic. We now have a hint of happiness in the air, and the blossoming of spring love. The young couple are not forbidden at all from constantly retiring and whispering about this and that. Trubetskoy's kind face is shining with the fulfilment of happiness. The younger brother is less sympathetic, rather tire à 4 épingles, but very aristocratically elegant. He treats [[Tanya]] with respectful enthusiasm. It's lovely to see [[Sasha]] and [[Leva]]; they cannot conceal their pleasure, seeing [[Tanya]] revived and enlivened.

			''[[Uka]]'' has been unwell, which forced him to postpone his trip abroad until Tuesday 27th.

Пора тебе рассказать, Толя, о происходящем здесь очень интересном романе. Вот уж несколько дней гостят у нас братья ''Трубецкие''. Сначала приехал старший Василий (тебе известный); а потом младший. С первого же дня видно было, что Василий более, чем когда-либо, влюблён в Таню и что не обойдётся без объяснения. Разумеется, вся Каменка начала следить за перипетиями этого романа с напряжённым вниманием. Не знали, как относится к нему Таня? Не находит ли она его слишком не стоящим её в умственном отношении? Что скажут Саша и Лева?

Наконец третьего дня вечером в маленьком садике Трубецкой сделал Тане признание и предложение руки и сердца. Ловкая ''Танька'' поступила удивительно умно. Она сказала ему, что не влюблена в него, но очень его любит и готова выдти за него, но 2) не хочет ни его, ни себя связывать и потому только тог да допустит официальное сватовство, когда он: а) получит разрешение родителей и б) устроит обеспеченное и безбедное существование. В тот же вечер было решено, что он поедет хлопотать об отпуске и, получивши его, отправится в ''Веве'' к родителям, позволение которых надеется получить без затруднения, в чем можно усомниться, так как они прочили ему Богатую невесту. Он хотел говорить с Сашей, но она отклонила его объяснение, так как не хочет быть компрометированной в случае отказа родителей. Вообще же и Саша и Лева отнеслись к этому браку скорее сочувственно, главным образом, оттого, что он, видимо, до крайности улыбается Тане. Ты не можешь себе представить, до чего она ''сияет счастием'' и как сделалась ослепительно хороша. Все, начиная с бабушки, очень рады и желают, чтобы брак осуществился: Трубецкой всем очень симпатичен. У нас теперь в воздухе носится неопределённое веянье счастья, любви, весенняго расцвета жизни. Молодой чете нимало не возбраняется беспрестанно уединяться и шептаться о чем-то. Добрая рожа Трубецкого вся рдеет полнотой счастия. Младший брат менее симпатичен, немножко tire à 4 épingles, но очень аристократически изящен. С Таней он обращается почтительно-восторженно. Приятно смотреть на Сашу и Леву;—они не могу скрыть своего удовольствия, видя, как Таня воскресла, ожила.

''Ука'' был нездоров, что заставило отложить поездку за границу до вторника 27-го.
