It was not a "''series of poems''" that I received, but rather an enormous "Summer Fairy-Tale", which includes not only a ''"chorus of toadstools"'' and a ''"song of strawberries''", but, in short, several ''hundreds'' of poems; let us suppose these are not at all bad, and perhaps even possible to set to music — but only in the form of a colossal cantata the length of a whole multi-act ''opera''. Or have you not seen the text of this "Summer Fairy-Tale"? Probably not, for otherwise you wouldn't have sent it to me, and would have told Istomin that he was a fool. I thank you for the munificent 50-ruble payment, dangled before me as a very tempting offer. What do you call a number? The headings? Если б я не был так уверен в твоей дружбе, то мог бы подумать, что ты хотел насмеяться надо мной. Никакого «''ряда стихотворений''» я не получил, а получил огромную «летнюю сказку», в которой есть и «''хор поганок''», и «''песнь земляники''», и, одним словом, несколько ''сотен'' стихов, положим, очень недурных и, положим, даже возможных для положения на музыку, — но ведь не иначе, как в форме колоссальной кантаты в размерах целой многоактной ''оперы''. Или ты не видел текста этой «Летней сказки»? Вероятно, нет, ибо иначе тыне послал бы мне его и сказал бы Истомину, что он дурак. Благодарю тебя за щедрую 50-ркблевую плату, предлагаемую мне как нечто очень соблазнительное. Что ты называешь номером? Рубрики? В таком случае этих номeеров будет 9, и из них, напр[имер] в первом, ''40'' строф !!! Ну, одним словом, это вздор.

Смерть Булыгинского весьма опечалила меня. Был один краткий период моей жизни, когда он оказал мне большие услуги и оказался в высшей степени бескорыстным. Он был скучен как собеседник, но доктор был очень даровитый и добрый человек.

Я работаю над переложениями Бортнянского. Хочу скорее отделаться, страшно напрягаю себя и, может быть, поэтому стал очень раздражителен. Живу в большом доме ''solo'' и благодаря отсутствию всяких помех надеюсь скоро разделаться с этой обузой. Надеюсь не в дальнем будущем побывать в Москве и увидеть Вас всех, милых друзей. Прощай, голубчик! Прости, что начало письма отзывается раздражением, испытанным мной утром при получении твоего странного предложения.
