Dear friend!
Thank you for the letter and credit note. I was very glad to have this money. There were no letters for me whatsoever poste restante, and I must confess to being glad about that, because at this moment I'm not in a mood to give serious thought to the opera.

You write that "Onegin" isn't going on, and that I ought to have petitioned Begichev. Far from it! I would sooner that you, acting as my publisher, concern yourself with this, and in the event of a refusal then your self-respect as a publisher, it seems to me, will suffer less than mine as an author (the haughtiest pride of all). The opera was staged last year, it made a decent amount, and if now it's not being revived, then that's either the result of someone's ill-will or stupidity. It's impossible for me to explain the reasons why, without freeing myself from Rome's miserable influence. Be so good as to find out what's the matter, and if there's anything you can do — do it. It's a strange thing! I'm on good terms with Begichev but, I find it objectionable and humiliating to approach him with a request — I don't know why.

I've been generally unlucky with everything this season, and for some reason I've been hard done by. "The Maid of Orleans" isn't going on, because Kamenskaya (that bitch who caused me so much humiliation and suffering last year) . "Onegin" isn't going on, Auer is using dirty tricks against the violin concerto, no-one is playing the (second) piano concerto — in shot, this is bad! But what I find terribly insulting, painful and annoying is that the Theatre Directorate, not having given a single kopek to "The Maid of Orleans", are giving 30 thousand for staging "The Snow Maiden" .
