On the other hand, in order to distract themselves, they all indulge in endless parties and amusements, and even the children go on visits every day, while [[~~Leva~~]] goes out boozing somewhere and never returns until late at night. [[Sasha]] had a terrible attack of pain in her side, etc. etc. In short, this is a madhouse! You write that, having learned about Martynova's death, you are afraid that something similar might happen to [[Tanya]]. I've been thinking this myself. Anyway, it's not so much [[Tanya]] that I feel sorry for in all this, because I'm starting to doubt her intelligence and goodness of heart, but her unfortunate father and mother. 	Только что вернулся с железной дороги, куда ходил на свидание с Кондратьевым, проехавшим из Неаполя прямо в Париж. С ним вместе приехали Мери, Дина и Эмма, которые проведут здесь ещё несколько дней и уедут во Флоренцию. Я теперь стал ужасно прилежен: кончил своё трио, в глубине души доволен им, и уже, со свойственною мне торопливостью, принялся переписывать его. Хочется поскорее кончить, чтобы послать в Россию и узнать, что про него скажут Танеев, Альбрехт и др[угие], мнением коих дорожу. С другой стороны, чтобы забыться, все они пускаются в бесконечные увеселения и кутежи, и даже дети, что ни день, ездят в гости, а Лева кутит где-то и раньше поздней ночи никогда не возвращается. У Саши был страшный припадок боли в боку и т. д. и т. д. Одним словом, это дом сумасшедших! Ты пишешь, что, узнав про смерть Мартыновой, ты опасаешься, чтобы с Таней чего-нибудь подобного не случилось. Я и сам об этом думал. Впрочем, ведь во всем этом мне не столько Таню жаль, ибо я начинаю сомневаться в её уме и добром сердце, а несчастных отца и мать.
