			I've just arrived in [[Warsaw]]. Since the train to [[Moscow]] doesn't leave until 3 o'clock, I've taken a room at the "''Europe''" Hotel, and I'm just about to start to perform my ablutions. The journey here from [[Vienna]] isn't particularly long or tiring, but I was awfully tired (i.e. not physically, but from nervous tension). Never before have I been so disgusted returning to my fatherland as I have been this time. Isn't this a premonition that I'll never leave it again? The Russian porters seemed to me like the most arrogant Kalmucks, the bear-like gendarmes, the snub-nosed officials who disdainfully inspected my luggage, and then rolled up at the restaurant and with stylish nonchalance grabbed whatever was on the buffet — all of them filled me with a desire to inflict some sort of unpleasantness upon them. Perhaps when I reach Rus proper, this will pass, and I'll regain the ability to rejoice in the Great Russian spirit — but for now I'm disgusted. Still 2 more days to go!

Да, Модя, стыдно признаться, — но опостыла мне милая родина и не сладостные чувства возбуждает во мне приближение её. Сейчас принесли мне чай, и что ж, вместо коричневого заграничного навара из чайника полилась жидкость цвета {{...}} — противно; принесли «''Голос''», и как увидал я эту квинтэссенцию петербургизма, — так жутко и гадко стало! О стократ милая Италия: подобно какому-то раю представляешься ты мне (кроме Неаполя), и как мне приятно воображать тебя там! А всё-таки, Модя, не засиживайся и не упускай из виду, что только изобилие денег может скрасить тоску переезда. Да! Прими во внимание, что если ты поедешь, как я, с курьерским прямым поездом, то ''нужно в Вене ночевать''. Из Италии поезд приходит в 10 ч[асов] веч[ера] и в Россию идёт на другой день в 11 ч[асов].

Видел я в Вене балет «''Der Spielmann''»: превосходная, очень новая вещь. Там в 1-ом действии есть сцена, когда под звуки волшебной скрипки все крысы города отовсюду стремглав выбегают и спускаются в реку; страшно эффектно.

Целую тебя, Модичка, и Колю, и Гришу. Нередко помышляю о Вас. Мэри, Эмме, Дине — поклон.
