Suisse, Canton de Berne, Interlaken.
My dear Papochka!
Thank you for your dear letter , which I received 2 weeks ago in Soden. Regarding our stay in the aforementioned place, I can only say that we were there at the right time, i.e. up until the end of the course of treatment it was very quiet and pleasant. Most of the patients who came after us were unable to remain for the whole course, since when the first news came about the war everyone rapidly began to flee to Switzerland, fearing that the railway lines would be damaged, or that the carriages would be requisitioned for troops. Taking a direct route was actually very difficult; the influx of refugees from various German spas was so overwhelming that many could not find places on trains or in hotels. To avoid such unpleasant difficulties and delays, Volodya and I made a huge detour via Stuttgart and Lake Constance, before reaching Interlaken without too much difficulty. Any words about the strong impression Switzerland makes, and especially about the marvellous place where we are staying, would be inadequate. Interlaken is situated between two lakes, Thun and Brienz, and is surrounded on all sides by enormous Alpine mountains and glaciers. This sight is so magnificent and astounding that on the first day of my stay I even felt somewhat frightened and oppressed, but little by little I became acclimatised to these wonders of nature, and I'm experiencing a whole range of pleasures from appreciating the beauty of nature. The only minor source of irritation is the countless Englishmen dashing around Switzerland. Wherever you point you're bound to meet the sons of Albion .

I have received a letter from Modest , but Tolya remains stubbornly silent. I often think about you and worry that you are bored in stuffy Piter. Couldn't you go to Sasha for a couple of months, or at least to Amaliya's? I kiss you hard, my darling; Lizaveta Mikhaylovna also. Address: Suisse, Canton de Berne, Interlaken.
P. Tchaikovsky
Volodya kisses you hard and thanks you for remembering him.
