I arrived in the evening, was greeted with great joy, and even the two old ladies from the big house (Lizaveta and Katerina Vasilyevna) came to see me; this was very pleasant, but since there is no such thing as honey without tar, I had two spoonfuls of it; 1) The whole way I dreamed about Stepan, about the routine that he would instantly establish, about how I would immediately find myself in my complete customary environment — but, alas, it turned out that he had left for [[Kiev]] that very day; 2) amongst those who greeted me was ''Blumenfeld''. When I saw him, my face turned very sour. After all, I came here above all to work properly, and in work every neighbour hinders me, and the more so when he is a musician. All the time I was away, he wasn't there, and then, on the morning of the day of my arrival he turned up, as if to purposely spoil my pleasure. Well, what's to be done! Despite this combination, I still managed to write the entr'acte to the 2nd act, and quite successfully so. Here I have become human again, here I am living as a rational being should live, and not as a block of wood that anyone can move anywhere, and hammer with impunity in the most sensitive places. Before I left [[Moscow]], I met [[Rimsky-Korsakov]] and his wife twice; ''ils m'ont combié de'' courtesies and expressions of love and friendship. I very firmly declined their advances, and didn't go to them or dine with them at the [[Huberts]], and I'm very glad that I did so. 	Милый Модя! Проведя в Киеве ~~1½2~~ дня в беспрерывном сознавании: безмерности счастия быть свободным и далёким от московской суеты, я приехал сюда третьего дня. Из членов семьи здесь Анна, Тася и Ука, а при нем две гувернантки. Приехал я вечерам, был встречен с великаю радостью, и даже две старушки из большого дама (Лиз[авета] и Кат[ерина] ~~Васtильевны~~]) пришли повидаться; это было весьма приятно, но так как без дёгтя в меду нельзя обойтись, то я съел две ложки оного: 1) Всю дорогу я мечтал е Степане, о порядке, который он мигом установит, о том, что я попаду сразу в свою полную обычную обстановку; — увы, оказалось, что он в этот самый день уехал в Киев; 2) в числе встретивших меня был ''Блуменфельд''. Увидя его, я сделал очень кислее лица. Ведь прежде всего я приехал сюда как следует поработать, а в работе всякий сосед меня стесняет, а тем более когда он музикус. И как нарочно, все время, пока я отсутствовал, — его не было, — а в день моего приезда утром и он явился, как бы нарочно, чтобы испортить удовольствие. Ну, нечего делать!
