Сегодня, пока я доканчивал мои писания, Модест в сопровождении Н. Д. Кондратьева отправился на консультацию к другому, весьма хорошему адвокату, и он обещал составить обстоятельную записку на ''бланке'' в самом скором времени. Он, так же как и первый адвокат, очень удивлялся делаемым ему вопросам и как бы не сразу понимал, в чем дело, говоря, что никакого ''уголовного'' преследования в таком деле быть не может, а можно только взыскивать ''dommage intérêts'' гражданским порядком. Ради Бога прости, что дело это так затянулось. По рекомендации хозяина отеля мы обратились сначала к какому-то бестолковому и беспутному человеку, который только отнял время.

Ценою значительного усилия мне удалось однако же для самого себя непостижимо скоро окончить марш и кантату, которые я высылаю завтра к Осипу Ивановичу с просьбой доставить кантату в коронационную комиссию, а марш и кстати готовое 3-е действие «''Мазепы''» в тебе. Спасибо за предложение денег. Две недели тому назад я взял вперёд из известного тебе источника ''2000'', которые должен был бы получить в июне. Надеюсь, что их хватит. (Вследствие рокового стечения обстоятельств я принуждён содержать здесь свою племянницу и издержал уже с 1-го января по сие время 5000 рублей. Это между нами). Но летом мне ''страшно и ужасно'' будут нужны деньги. Я даже мечтаю о каком-нибудь займе вроде ''третьяковского''. Во всяком случае спасибо, голубчик, покамест не нужно.
