Я получил письмо от ''Стасова''. Он просит убедительно дать для публичной библиотеки моих рукописей, преимущественно:

1) «Ромео и Юлию» 2) «Бурю» 3) «Франческу» 4) 3-ий квартет, а впрочем, рад будет и всякой другой рукописи. Из этих 4 вещей у тебя первых двух нет во всяком случае («''Буря''» давно пропала). Можешь ли ты дать Стасову две последние? Если нет, то что ты можешь дать? Потрудись, голубчик, сам ответить ему (адресуя в публичную библиотеку Влад[имиру] Вас[ильевичу] Стасову) или прямо пошли те рукописи, которые найдутся и которые ты пожелаешь дать.

Ты укоряешь меня, что я виноват, что ты должен торопиться с моими писаниями. Я виноват только в том смысле, что слишком много пишу, но не в том, что не во время отдал тебе вещи. ''Сюиту'' я вручил тебе ''25 июля''. Через месяц я был у тебя и видел её покоившейся на ''твоём столе''. Конечно, и ты не виноват, ибо значит нельзя было отдать её раньше гравёрам, — но и я не виноват. Весь сентябрь я посвятил житью в Плещееве, чтобы без помехи делать корректуры, но пришлось сидеть сложа руки, ибо корректуры попали вместо Подольска в Серпухов и получил я их уже в Петербурге во время репетиции и нужно было геройское усилие чтобы всё-таки сделать её. Итак, не вини меня, как и я тебя не виню. ''Это фатум''. Еду по делам в Париж. Не позже 10-го буду в Москве. «Фантазия» идёт не 1-го, а 15-го. Котек очень обижен, что ты ему не кланялся в письмах ко мне. Здоровье его очень плохо, но ''не'' безнадёжно.
