Обстоятельства сложились так для меня неблагоприятно, что я должен был по необходимости 31-го числа выехать из Москвы. Я надеялся в этот день увидеться и познакомиться с Вами на Троицком мосту, но случилось так, что и это было невозможно. Тороплюсь, для успокоения сильно встревоженной совести, написать Вам эти строки, чтобы от души поблагодарить Вас за «''Снопы''», которые доставили мне поистине художественное наслаждение и усладили тоску железнодорожной поездки.

Как ни досадно, что суета приготовлений к отъезду помешала мне познакомиться с Вами, — но я утешаюсь мыслью, что буду иметь возможность при первой поездке в Петербург представиться Вам и вознаградить себя за неудачу. Примите мою искреннюю благодарность и уверение в глубоком уважении Вашего покорнейшего слуги,
