With regard to "Cherevichki" permit me to inform you of the following. If Altani recovers and is in the near future able to resume his post, I can wish for nothing better than for him to learn and to conduct "Cherevichki". But if his illness is prolonged and if this will cause no unpleasantness whatsoever to anyone, then I am not averse to making one last attempt in my life to try to learn and conduct the first three performances of the opera myself.

Is this possible? How is Altani's health? God willing he will make a full recovery and be able to start working as soon as possible. But what if it so happens that he doesn't leave his home before the spring? After all, everyone will suffer. And if somehow you find my proposal appropriate, then I should very much want to assist the Directorate, and start to climb onto the conductor's chair myself. I have no right do to this; I am very useless as a kapellmeister — but I can try; and if I don't succeed then then next time I make a similar suggestion you can refuse me without standing on ceremony. Take the trouble, most kind Pavel Mikhaylovich, after considering every circumstance, and having previously sent someone to talk to Altani, to decide this matter and to write me a few words in reply. If it's at all unpleasant for Altani for me to take over his role, or if, for example, you consider it inopportune to hand "Cherevichki" over to me, thereby delaying the production of "Cordelia", which is next in line — then I won't be in the least offended if you categorically refuse me.

I ask you to summon me to Moscow whenever convenient if the matter requires it.

Sincerely respectful and devoted,
