	I've spent all these last few days vacillating over how I should respond to you regarding my nomination as an honorary member. Anyway, perhaps today or tomorrow I might still find the opportunity to visit there. In any case, I hope your dear mother will forgive me for not calling on ~~here~~ here in the neighbourhood, if it turns out that having flown to Demyanovo I don't catch her there. Всё эти дни я провёл в колебании относительно того, как Вам отвечать на избрание меня в почётные члены. Не могу заставить себя написать Вам письмо в официальном тоне; всё кажется, что это будет какая-то комедия, а так как я действительно тронут, — то не хочется обращать все это в шутку. Поэтому я ограничиваюсь выражением приватной моей благодарности, очень живой и искренной, а если нужна официальная, то в субботу (я буду в Москве утром и заеду к Вам в Консерваторию) я попрошу Николая Прокофьевича сочинить мне такое письмо.

Возвратилась ли Варвара Павловна? Я до того погружен в корректуры «''Манфред''», так тороплюсь с ними, что ей-Богу не нахожу времени побывать в Демьянове. Впрочем, может быть, сегодня или завтра всё-таки найду возможным побывать там. Во всяком случае надеюсь, что милая мамаша простит мне, что не навестил её здесь по соседству, если окажется, что разлетевшись в Демьяново, я её не застану там.
