	At night we passed close to a squadron stationed near Piraeus and blockading the Greek coast. By morning the wind had died down completely. At 11 o'clock in the morning we passed a few steps from Cape St. Angela, on the very corner of which lives a hermit who emerges as ships pass (on the whistle) with a flag and blesses them. When we passed, he was working in his garden plot. I read, chatted with the passengers, and ate a lot during both ''repas''. 			We're now sailing in sight of Sicily, and Etna can be seen, smoking slightly. Adjacent to it, some huge column of smoke with a fire below it has been visible for a couple of hours. The captain cannot understand what it is, and he seems somewhat worried, as a result of which I find myself a little frightened. The sea is as quiet as a mirror. Nothing in particular happened during the day. One circumstance that spoils the pleasure of travelling for me is that everyone tries to talk to me as much as possible about music. One Englishman, an awful amateur musician, is particularly annoying, constantly asking what I think about this or that romance by Tosti, Denza, and so on; there's also a French doctor, the inventor of some new piano, exceptionally stupid, who's also always pestering me.

			The column of smoke and flame that I wrote about yesterday turned out to be an enormous eruption of Etna, but not at the summit, rather on the side somewhere. About 200 miles away, this eruption was still clearly visible, and as we drew closer, the sight became more and more interesting. [[Aleksey]] woke me at 2 o'clock at night to go to see this one-of-a-kind spectacle. We were entering the Strait of Messina: the sea, which had been calm all day, suddenly became stormy, and it's impossible to convey how beautiful this combination of moonlight with the fire of Etna and the raging sea was. I went to bed at 3, and at 5 the captain sent a sailor to wake me again to see the city of Messina, the sunrise, and ''Etna'' from the other side. Unfortunately the eruption was still a long way off. Later we passed between the volcano Stromboli and another ''new'' island smoking in the middle of the sea. At least the captain, who was perfectly familiar with this route, never suspected there was a volcano here. Only in [[Marseilles]] will we learn from the newspapers what's going on. According to the captain, it must be a very serious eruption. Today the weather is wonderful, and the sea is thoroughly calm again.

			It was most interesting today to pass through the so-called ''Bouches de Saint Boniface'', i.e. the strait between Corsica and Sardinia. At first only Sardinia is visible, represented by countless rows of rocky cliffs with the most fantastical shape. Then mountainous and picturesque Corsica. In the middle of the strait is the place where the French frigate "''La Lemillante''" was lost in 1856, and the site of a dangerous underwater rock. Then, having passed this strait, we went out into the open sea.

Третьего дня около 12 часов въехали в Босфор при великолепнейшей погоде. Он поразительно красив, и чем дальше, тем лучше. Около 3-х часов приехали в Константинополь. Суета при въезде в порт страшная. На встречу симпатичного итальянского семейства приехало целое общество; все дамы плакали от радости свиданья; картина была очень трогательная. Часов около 5 сели в лодку и переехали в город. Так как капитан решил остаться сутки в Константинополе, то я захотел переночевать в гостинице. Но в лучших гостиницах все было занято, и грек-коммиссионер насилу нашёл нам дрянную меблированную комнату. Обедали в ресторане целой компанией (я очень сдружился с тифлисскими французами, ехавшими с нами из Тифлиса в Батум:), ходил потом по городу, вечером был в классическом концерте, в коем публики вовсе не было. Кое-как проспал ночь (были клопы). Весь остальной день посвятил осмотру достопримечательностей. Св[ятя] София меня восхитила и поразила. В общем же Константинополь несимпатичен, а знаменитые константинопольские собаки все время возбуждали во мне тошноту. К 5 часам были уже снова на пароходе, и вскоре мы тронулись. Появились новые пассажиры: англичанин-турист и три дамы, не особенно симпатичные. Мне приятно было вернуться в свою милую каютку, и вообще весь вечер я наслаждался морем, лунным светом и поэтичностью морского путешествия.

Сегодня (6-го мая) волнение довольно сильное. Многие пассажирки больны. Из мужчин некоторые тоже испытывали тошноту. Я совершенно здоров, и даже скорее нахожу некоторое наслаждение в этом качании и в созерцании бушующих голубых волн. Страху никакого. Очень свыкся с окружающей обстановкой и со всеми перезнакомился, но особенно подружился с одним турецким офицером, еду1цим в Париж.

Ночью мы проходили вблизи эскадры, стоящей около Пирея и блокирующей греческие берега. К утру ветер совершенно утих. В 11 часов утра проходили в нескольких шагах от мыса св[ятая] Ангела, на самом угле которого живёт пустынник, выходящий при проходе пароходов (по свистку) с флагом и благословляющий их. Когда мы проходили, он работал на своём огородике. Читал, болтал с пассажирами, ел очень много за обоими ''repas''. Сжился с пароходом настолько, что кажется, как будто уж месяца 4 плаваю.

Мы плывём теперь в виду Сицилии, и видна Этна, которая слегка дымится. Рядом с ней виден уже часа 2 какой-то громадный столб дыма и внизу его огонь. Капитан не может понять, что это такое, и как будто слегка беспокоится, вследствие чего и на меня находит какой-то страх. Море тихо как зеркале>. Ничего особенного в течение дня не произошло. Одно обстоятельство мне портит удовольствие путешествия, — это то, что всё со мной стараются говорить как можно более о музыке. Особенно надоедает один англичанин, ужасный любитель музыки, беспрестанно спрашивающий, какого я мнения о том или другом романсе Т ости, Денца и т. п. ещё есть доктор француз, изобретатель какого-то нового фортепьяно, необыкновенно глупого, тот тоже все пристаёт.

Столб дыма и пламени, о котором я писал вчера, оказался громадным извержением Этны, но не на вершине, а где-то сбоку. Вёрст за 300 уже ясно было видно это извержение, и по мере того как мы приближались, зрелище становилось все интереснее. В 2 часа ночи меня разбудил Алексей, чтобы идти смотреть на этот единственный в своём роде спектакль. Мы входили в Мессинский пролив; море, которое весь день было покойно, тут оказалось бурным, и нельзя передать, до чего было красиво это сочетание лунного света с огнём Этны и бушующим морем. В 3 я ушёл спать, а в 5 капитан прислал матроса опять будить меня, чтобы видеть город Мессину, восход солнца и ''Этну'' с другой стороны. К сожалению извержение все таки осталось далеко. Позднее мы проходили между вулканом Стромболи и ещё но вы м дымящимся среди моря островком. По крайней мере капитан, превосходно знающий этот путь, ни когда и не подозревал тут вулкана. Только в Марселе мы узнаем из газет, в чем дело. По словам капитана, извержение должно быть очень серьёзное. Сегодня погода чудная, и море опять совершенно покойно.

Весьма интересно было проходить сегодня так называемые ''Bouches de S[ain]t Boniface'', т. е. пролив между Корсикой и Сардинией. Сначала видна только Сардиния, представляющая бесчисленный ряд скалистых, с самыми фантастическими формами, скал. Затем гористая и живописная Корсика. В середине пролива обозначено место, где в 1856 г[оду] погиб французский фрегат «''La Lemillante''» и где находится опасная подводная скала. Затем, пройдя этот пролив, мы вышли в открытое море.
