Твоё прекрасное (в двойном значении слова, ибо оно крас ными чернилами написано) письмо получил и прочёл с немалым удовольствием. Очень немногие письма доставляют мне удовольствие; большинство их беспокоит и злит меня, ибо корреспонденция моя год от году все увеличивается и дошло до того, что я теперь половину своего времени посвящаю письмам. Начинаю глубоко ненавидеть ''почту''. После долгого недомогания я наконец могу назвать себя здоровым, хотя всё-таки ещё не решаюсь купаться. Представь себе: выстроил я собственную купальню и до сих пор, во все лето, только пять раз купался. Не везёт мне летом на севере; большую его часть всегда бываю нездоров.

Погода стоит у нас теперь осенняя, печальная. Как будто она оплакивает Кондратьевых. ''Эндека'' уже уехал в Петербург со всем своим собачьим семейством, которое увеличилось четырьмя щенками ''Лейки''. Что касается женского персонала Кондратьевской семьи, то они уезжают все завтра. Сегодня все они будут у меня обедать и ужинать, ибо повар их уже уехал. В последний раз в жизни я уговаривался жить где-нибудь сообща с Кондратьевыми.

В самом деле это скучно; теперь ещё разгар лета, а между тем их отъезд сообщает ему характер конца, и вид опустелой главной дачи внушает некоторое уныние. Другое дело, если бы они осенью уехали, — это в порядке вещей. Одним словом, я зол на Кондратьевых. Эмма приняла на 2 месяца предложение ехать в Крым с семейством неких ''Столпаковых'' и тоже уезжает завтра. Зато, как нарочно, те дачники, которые мне портят все удовольствие пребывания в Майданове, как нарочно, остаются до сентября, так что вы их ещё здесь застанете.

Вследствие нездоровья я ужасно мало работал все это лето и с ужасом помышляю, что осень на носу, — а у меня и половины не сделано всего, что я собирался сделать. Зато я очень, много читал и между прочим перечитываю с неописанным наслаждением ''Толстого''. Чем более он мне не нравится как мыслитель и проповедник, тем все более и более я преклоняюсь перед его могучим гением как писателя. Прочёл также недавно вышедшие мемуары ''Н. И. Греча''. Я думаю, и тебе они будут не безынтересны.

Скажи Моде, что едва ли я поеду в ''Уколово к Ник[олаю] Ильичу'' — разве в начале сентября. Буду с нетерпением ожидать вас обоих около 20 августа у себя здесь в Майданове. Комната у тебя будет превосходная; у Моди тоже. Поверь, что мы преприятно проведём несколько деньков. А засим целую вас обоих крепко. Надеюсь, что все флюсы прошли.
