''[[Emma]]'' had become so intrusive and affected lately, that I could simply not bear her, and longed for her to be gone, while at the same time I was ashamed of my horrible feelings towards her. 			I understand your fears regarding ''Gani Olkhovsky''. I found myself in exactly the same position when ''Dima'' announced that he was coming to visit. I wrote flatly refusing to accept him. He still came yesterday for one day, took 25 rubles, and left. I was very inclined to be hostile towards him, but this time he was so affectionate, and, apparently, sincerely loving toward me that I completely melted, and I want to invite him during your stay.

			The sooner you arrive, the better.

			I'm not working nearly as successfully as you are. I'm edging towards the end at a snail's pace.

Чтобы не забыть, прежде всего отвечаю на твой вопрос об адресе Никол[ая] Ильича. И писать и ехать к ним нужно по ''Московско-Курской'' жел[езной] дор[огой], станция ''Коренная пустынь''. Оттуда нанимается извозчик в деревню ''Уколову''.

Провёл 3 дни в Москве. Все время шёл дождь, и был один такой ливень, что ничего подобного я в жизни не видал. Тоска в Москве была убийственная. Но цель моей поездки, т. е. двукратное присутствование на торжественных богослужениях, в коих пел хор, находящийся под моим покровительством, — доставила мне большое удовольствие. Здесь мне на первое время очень чувствительно отсутствие Кондратьевых. Особенно по вечерам я скучаю. Последние 2 дни своего пребывания ''Мэри'' с барышнями и обедали, и ужинали у меня. А впрочем, нет худа без добра. ''Эмма'' стала до того навязчива и жеманна, что в последнее время я просто её выносить не мог и жаждал, чтобы её не было, а вместе с тем и стыдился своих дурных чувств по отношению к ней. Но должен признаться, что ''собственно её отсутствию очень радуюсь''.

Я с большим, с большим нетерпением буду теперь ждать тебя и Колю. Вчера на меня нашла неожиданно такая жажда сообщения с людьми, что вечером нарочно пошёл по деревне (чего терпеть не могу), чтобы перемолвить с каждым мальчишкой по нескольку слов. Мало того: зашёл к дачникам, временно поселившимся на большой даче, и добрый час посидел, болтая с ними о всяком вздоре.

Я очень понимаю твои страхи по поводу ''Гани Ольховского''. На меня нашёл такой же точно страх, когда ''Дима'' объявил, что приедет гостить. Я написал решительный отказ принять его. Он всё-таки вчера приехал на один день, взял 25 р[ублей] и уехал. Я был очень настроен враждебно к нему, но он был до того на этот раз ласков и, по-видимому, искренно любовно ко мне относился, что я совершенно растаял и хочу во, время твоего пребывания и его пригласить.

Чем скорее вы приедете, тем лучше.

Работаю я далеко не так удачно, как ты. Иду к концу черепашьими шагами.
