Твоё последнее письмо я получил в Москве уже несколько дней тому назад, но буквально не имел возможности ответить. Вчера вечером вернулся домой и сегодня весь день посвящаю корреспонденции, которой набралось столько, что все-так коротко буду отвечать. Панаева, сколько мне известно, весной не свободна; но если бы и была свободна — я не знаю, советовать ли Рогге брать её. Я ей пока ничего не сказал но если переговоривши с Рогге после моего письма, ты мне напишешь от него инструкцию, — я поведу переговоры. Дело в том, что она в Москве ''никакого успеха'' не имеет. Не то чтобы ей шикали и бранили её, но хуже: — её игнорируют. Положение их самое грустное; контракт с Мамонтовой заключён был глупо, на условии 25 процентов со сбора, — а сборов никаких. Теперь нужда заставила их быть под властью ''Валерьяна'', и он самодурствует над ними ужасно. Бедные Татуся и Жорж печальны и убиты, но горький опыт не убедил их что она не только не звезда первой величины, а даже не простая обыкновенная порядочная примадонна. Голос её сильно пострадал; она подурнела и постарела, и людям, не видавшим её прежде, она кажется старой и некрасивой. Играть вовсе не умеет. И всё-таки они мечтают о Лондоне, Америке и т. д. Одним словом, как друг их, я желал бы, чтобы Рогге на хороших условиях пригласил Панаеву, но по совести не могу рекомендовать её в качестве примадонны, способной сильно заинтересовать. Не распространяй этого, но поговори с Рогге откровенно. Чтобы покончить по этому поводу, скажу ещё, что мои надежды на успех в ''Муз[ыкальном] общ[естве]'' не оправдались. Она пела в последнем концерте ''без успеха''. Ах, как мне жаль её, и ''особенно'' Ж[оржа], который все больше и больше мне нравится своей сердечностью. А всё-таки она поёт по-моему отлично, и я не понимаю, почему она не нравится московской публике.

Ну-с, я уж 7 раз на решетящих дирижировал «''Черевичками''». С каждым разом делаюсь спокойнее и увереннее. Не знаю, как будет в публике, но самое страшное было для меня не публика, а артисты, — а с ними я совсем освоился! Тем не менее эти репетиции так поглощали все мои нравственные силы, я так утомлялся, что совсем уж ничего другого не мог делать, хотя и очень бы нужно заняться «''Чародейкой''». Писем совершенно не в состоянии был писать, а потому не сердитесь. что молчал так долго. Каждый раз, как получаю ваши письма, мне смертельно хочется полететь к вам. Соскучился по вас, да и Кавказ уж больно мил моему сердцу. Как отделаюсь от «''Чародейки''», так немедленно к вам приеду. Трудно сказать утвердительно, когда это будет, но ''мне кажется'', что я попаду к вам гораздо раньше, чем вы думаете. Известно ли тебе, что Вер а Третьякова выходит замуж за ''Зилоти''. Накануне отъезда я был на торжественном обеде по этому случаю. Бываю теперь у Алексеевых; очень дружим с Алекс[андрой] Влад[имировной]. Меня очень беспокоит· состояние ''Пани''. Вот что! Зовите меня в каждом письме поскорее; это меня заставит поскорей решиться ехать. Целую, обнимаю всех трёх нежнейшим образом.

	I received your last letter in [[Moscow]] several days ago, but I literally didn't have the opportunity to reply. I returned home yesterday evening, and today I'm devoting the whole day to correspondence, which has piled up so much that I'm still only answering briefly. [[Panayeva]], so far as I know, isn't free in the spring; but even if she were free, I don't know whether I'd advise Rogge to engage her. I haven't said anything to her yet, but if you talk to Rogge after my letter, and you write to me with his instructions, then I'll undertake the negotiations. The fact is that she's had ''no success whatsoever'' in [[Moscow]]. It's not that they boo and hiss her, but it's even worse than that: they ignore her. She is in the most miserable situation; the contract with [[Mamontova]] was stupidly concluded on the terms of 25 percent of the receipts — but there were no receipts at all. Now desperation has compelled them to go cap in hand to ''Valeryan'', and he is awfully tyrannical to them. Poor [[Aleksandra Panayeva-Kartsova\|Tatusya]] and Georges are broken and mortified, but this bitter experience has not convinced them ~~that~~ not only that she isn't a star of the first magnitude, but not even a plain ordinary decent prima donna. Her voice has suffered greatly; she has grown old and lost her looks, and to people who haven't seen her before, she appears old and unattractive. She doesn't know how to perform at all. And yet they have dreams of [[London]], America, etc. In short, as their friend, I should like Rogge to invite [[Panayeva]] on good terms, but in good conscience I cannot recommend her as a prima donna capable of attracting great interest.
