I returned home yesterday evening, and today I'm devoting the whole day to correspondence, which has piled up so much that I'm still only answering briefly. Panayeva, so far as I know, isn't free in the spring; but even if she were free, I don't know whether I'd advise Rogge to engage her. I haven't said anything to her yet, but if you talk to Rogge after my letter, and you write to me with his instructions, then I'll undertake the negotiations. The fact is that she's had no success whatsoever in Moscow. It's not that they boo and hiss her, but it's even worse than that: they ignore her. She is in the most miserable situation; the contract with Mamontova was stupidly concluded on the terms of 25 percent of the receipts — but there were no receipts at all. Now desperation has compelled them to go cap in hand to Valeryan, and he is awfully tyrannical to them. Poor Tatusya and Georges are broken and mortified, but this bitter experience has not convinced them <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">that </del>not only that she isn't a star of the first magnitude, but not even a plain ordinary decent prima donna. Her voice has suffered greatly; she has grown old and lost her looks, and to people who haven't seen her before, she appears old and unattractive. She doesn't know how to perform at all. And yet they have dreams of London, America, etc. In short, as their friend, I should like Rogge to invite Panayeva on good terms, but in good conscience I cannot recommend her as a prima donna capable of attracting great interest. Don't repeat all this, but speak frankly to Rogge. To finish on this matter, I'll also say that my hopes for her success at the Musical Society were unfounded. She sang in the last concert without success. Oh, how sorry I feel for her, and especially for Georges, whom I like more and more for his cordiality. But in my opinion she still sings splendidly, and I don't understand why the Moscow public doesn't like her.

I received your last letter in Moscow several days ago, but I literally didn't have the opportunity to reply. Each time I become calmer and more confident. I don't know how it will go with the public, but the worst thing for me wasn't the public, but rather the artists — and I've become completely used to them! Nevertheless, these rehearsals so sapped my moral strength that I couldn't do anything else at all, although I really needed to work on "The Enchantress". Every time I receive your letters, I desperately want to fly to you. I miss you, and indeed the Caucuses are also dear to my heart. As soon as I rid myself of "The Enchantress", I'll come to you immediately. It's difficult to say for sure when this will be, but it seems to me that I'll make it to see you much sooner than you think. Did you know that Vera Tretyakova is marrying Ziloti? The day before I left, I attended a formal dinner to mark the occasion. I'm now living with the Alekseyevs; we are very friendly with Aleksandra Vladimirovna. I'm very worried about Panyas condition. That's it! Now desperation has compelled them to go cap in hand to Valeryan, and he is awfully tyrannical to them. Poor Tatusya and Georges are broken and mortified, but this bitter experience has not convinced them that not only that she isn't a star of the first magnitude, but not even a plain ordinary decent prima donna.

I don't know how it will go with the public, but the worst thing for me wasn't the public, but rather the artists — and I've become completely used to them!

Poor Tatusya and Georges are broken and mortified, but this bitter experience has not convinced them that not only that she isn't a star of the first magnitude, but not even a plain ordinary decent prima donna. </ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Well now, I've already conducted 7 rehearsals of Cherevichki. Each time I become calmer and more confident. I don't know how it will go with the public, but the worst thing for me wasn't the public, but rather the artists — and I've become completely used to them! Nevertheless, these rehearsals so sapped my moral strength that I couldn't do anything else at all, although I really needed to work on "The Enchantres". I was in absolutely not state to write letters, so don't be angry that I've been silent for so long. That's it! Invite me to come soon in every letter; that will hasten my decision to go. I kiss and hug all three of you in the most tender fashion.</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">{{right|P.
