	I left [[Sasha]]'s just before my nameday, and since then have been roaming around Europe <ref name="note1"/>. I've been to [[Breslau]], [[Dresden]], [[Cologne]], [[Zurich]], [[Lucerne]], [[Geneva]], [[Milan]], on Lake ''Como'', and finally reached the city of [[Paris]], where this is my third day. In Switzerland I wandered around a great deal and, by the way, ascended the ''Rigi'' mountain by a newly installed railway, which is a marvel of construction. I also dropped in at [[Vevey]], where I wanted to gather all the necessary information for [[Sasha]] and sent it to her <ref name="note2"/>. She will find it very good and inexpensive there. The pensions <ref name="note3"/> for girls in ''Vevey'' are excellent, and she would easily be able to send the oldest three girls for under 30 francs a month. Vevey is in a truly superb setting, although those unaccustomed to it might be somewhat terrified by those towering, intimidating colossi. From Switzerland I made my way to Italy with the intention of travelling its entire length and breadth, but by [[Milan]] the heat was already so intolerable that I decided not to go any further south and, well and truly changing my mind, set my sights on [[Paris]], which is fine at any time of the year. I am unable to describe how comfortable and agreeable it is to live in [[Paris]] is, and how enjoyable it can be for someone intending to make the most of his time here. Even walking along the street by oneself and gazing into the shop windows is highly entertaining. And besides this, there are the theatres, excursions, museums — all of this fills the time so that one doesn't notice how it flies by. Tell ''Lida Olkhovskaya'' <ref name="note4"/> that I remember every step we took together in [[Paris]] twelve years ago. I intend to stay here for around a week, and then make my way back to the fatherland. Совесть меня ужасно терзает, что не даю Вам о себе известий, но это оттого, что я не знаю Вашего адреса в Павловске. Рискую адресовать в Петербург. Авось Вы или Л[изавета] М[ихайловна] завернёте туда и найдёте моё письмецо.

Я выехал от Саши накануне своих именин и с тех пор странствую по Европе. Был в Бреславле, Дрездене, Кёльне, Цюрихе, Люцерне, Женеве, Милане, на озере ''Комо'' и наконец добрался до города Парижа, где и обретаюсь уже третий день. В Швейцарии я много странствовал и, между прочим, подымался на гору ''Риги'' по вновь устроенной железной дороге, самого удивительного способа построения. Заезжал также в ''Веве'', где мне хотелось собрать нужные для Саши сведения, которые я ей и послал. Она может устроиться там очень недорого и хорошо. Пансионы для девочек в ''Веве'' отличные, и ей очень удобно будет посылать трёх старших в качестве приходящих за 30 франков в месяц. Местоположение в Веве поистине превосходное, хотя с непривычки как-то жутко и страшно среди этих высочайших, подавляющих громад. Из Швейцарии я пробрался в Италию с намерением объехать её всю вдоль и поперёк, но уже в Милане жара была настолько невыносима, что я не решился спуститься ещё южнее и, пораздумав хорошенько, направил свои стопы в Париж, где хорошо во всякое время года. Нельзя описать, до чего этот Париж удобен и приятен для жизни и как приятно можно здесь проводить время человеку, имеющему намеренье веселиться. Уже самое гулянье по улице и глазенье на магазины в высшей степени занимательно. А кроме того, театры, загородные прогулки, музеи — всё это наполняет время так, что и не замечаешь, как оно летит. Скажите ''Лиде Ольховской'', что я на каждом шагу вспоминаю, как мы вместе были в Париже 12 лет тому назад. Я намерен пробыть здесь около недели и затем стремлюсь в отечество. Вряд ли финансы дозволят мне ехать через Петербург, так что сомневаюсь увидаться с Вами летом. Утешаюсь мыслью, что, когда будут ставить мою оперу, мне придётся жить в Петербурге довольно долго.
