Голубушка Аня! Прости, что как водится, я оказался неаккуратным и неблагодарным корреспондентом. Мне смерть хотелось ответить тебе в твоём стиле, т. е. на русско-французском жаргоне, — но для этого нужно время, такой часок, когда хочется посмеяться и пошутить. А у меня таких часочков всегда было мало, теперь уже дошло до того, что я с величайшим усилием берусь за перо и лишь оттого пишу, что нельзя не писать своим близким.

Почта сделалась моим злейшим врагом: кому бы я ни писал письмо: Модесту, Толе, тебе, Кондратьеву, — я злюсь и пишу только чтобы доказать свою благодарность за полученные письма. Ах, Аня, до чего я утомлён постоянной работой и постоянной поспешностью в работе. Работа есть наслаждение, когда никто не стоит у тебя за спиной и не погоняет. Меня же постоянно погоняют: да ну пиши, не поспеешь, валяй и т. д., и т. д. Итак, душечка, никогда не сердись на меня за мои ленивые ответы, а уж особенно в нынешнем году прости меня.

Ужасно сожалею, что ты не могла приехать. Я проведу здесь страстную и святую. Едва ли поеду в Петербург. Хотелось бы перед отправлением на Кавказ всех Вас повидать — да время дорого. Мне теперь нужно более чем когда-либо спешить с инструментовкой «''Чародейки''». А ты, голубушка, не плати злом за зло, а напиши-ка мне поскорее опять, — могу ли я надеяться увидеть тебя в Майданове. Становится очень хорошо. Сегодня день дивный.
