But, to my utmost regret, I do not have any the opportunity at present to put any sort of opera at your disposal. Even though this opera is not completely finished, the piano reduction has been printed. All that remains is for me to orchestrate another 2½ acts. I hope to finish this work by the summer, and then, no matter how happy I might be to do something for your theatre to have my work included in the current repertoire — I would have absolutely no opportunity to write another whole opera for September. I need to gather my strength and rest in the summer. Believe me, most respected [[Anton Grigoryevich]], that I would be delighted to satisfy your wish, so flattering towards me, and if I am forcibly prevented from accepting your proposal, then this is because of the fact that I consider it impossible to write an entire opera in such a short time. But I hope that subsequently I will have the opportunity to submit something worthy of being staged at a theatre where you are at the head of the administration. Я всей душой сочувствую предпринятому Вами делу, и если буду жив и здоров, надеюсь поработать для Вашего театра. Но, к величайшему моему сожалению, в настоящее время я не имею возможности отдать в Ваше распоряжение какую-нибудь оперу. «''Чародейка''» не только отдана императорскому театру, но распределены даже партии, а хоры уже спевались, и на одной из спевок я присутствовал в Мариинском театре три недели тому назад. Тем не менее опера эта ещё не вполне кончена, хотя клавираусцуг и напечатан. А именно, мне осталось инструментовать ещё 2½ действия. Надеюсь окончить эту работу к лету, а затем, как бы я ни был счастлив, если бы при самом начале деятельности Вашего театра и мой труд какой-нибудь вошёл бы в текущий репертуар его, — но я решительно не имею возможности к сентябрю написать ещё одну оперу. Мне необходимо летом собраться с силами и отдохнуть. Поверьте, многоуважаемый Антон Григорьевич, что мне очень приятно было бы удовлетворить столь лестное для меня желание Ваше, и если я поневоле принуждён уклониться от предложения Вашего, то это потому, что в самом деле считаю невозможным в столь короткий срок написать целую оперу.
