From the fear and horror I feel at the thought that he might die, I can see that the horrible outcome of his illness will have an awful effect on me. Fate would have it that [[Nikolay Kondratyev\|Nikolay Dmitryevich]] is not just a friend to us, but more like a member of our family. Moreover, he's one of those people who are especially attached to life ''quand {{sic\|mème\|même}}''. Please, tell me about him. And what is this Bright's Disease? Is it the same as diabetes? Я принял героическое решение сделать теперь же всю оркестровку 4-го действия. Чувствую, что ежели этой обузы я не спущу с плеч до отъезда, то мне путешествие будет просто невыносимо. Поэтому со вчерашнего числа я сел экстраординарным образом, т. е. начинаю работать часом раньше, кончаю часом позже, за обедом нарочно почти ничего не ем и не пью, чтобы быть в работе свежим, одним [словом] напрягаю себя насколько можно без ущерба для здоровья. Но писем писать в этом состоянии невозможно; поэтому недели две ты будешь получать от меня лишь записочки в несколько слов. Я решительно никому писать не буду, кроме тебя, Н[адежды] Ф[иларетовны] и Толи, и то только по 2 слова каждому. Боже мой, как у меня сердце болит за Кондратьева. По страху и ужасу, который я испытываю при мысли, что он умрёт, я вижу, что скверный исход его болезни произведёт на меня ужасное действие. Судьба так сложилась, что Н[иколай] Д[митриевич] для нас с тобой больше чем приятель и как бы самый близкий родной. Притом же это один из тех людей, которые особенно страстно прилеплены к жизни ''quand {{sic|mème|même}}''. Пожалуйста, сообщай мне о нем. И что это за Брайтова болезнь? то же, что сахарная, или нет?

Праздники я провёл не один. У меня шесть дней прожил ''Кашкин'', Сначала я тяготился им, а когда он уехал — жаль было. Танеев тоже ночевал три ночи.

Радуюсь, что дело о Вашем житье в Боржоме решено. Не знаю, заедет ли Боб ко мне по дороге. Я писал ему и просил по возможности осчастливить меня своим прибытием. Боже мой, как я люблю Боба! и как он мил! Вурм писал мне сегодня про успех Панаевой. Очень рад.
