Lieber, guter Freund Willy!

Dear, good friend Willy!
Forgive me, but it was impossible for me to obtain an invitation for you from the Imperial [Russian] Musical Society in Moscow for this winter . I arrived in Moscow too late this spring, all the invitations had already been made by Mr Max Erdmannsdörfer ; apart from two local violinists, we will have Ondříček and Haliř coming from abroad, and there was no more room left for my dear friend Willy. However, I give you my word of honour that during the next season we shall have the honour of inviting you. I say we, because so far all I have been able to do is to recommend you to Erdmannsdörfer. This, however, is his final year [as principal conductor of the Moscow branch of the RMS], and from 1889 until my death (let us hope that this doesn't happen until 1910) all invitations for foreign artists will depend on me. So this is something quite settled, then. Please do not be angry with me: it really wasn't my fault. It's a shame that I wasn't able to come to Pavlovsk in August, but because I had to go on another quite long journey I just didn't have the time . Hopefully I will still be able to see you in Petersburg. Perhaps I will come to Hamburg again during this concert season .

Thank you very much for your friendly lines, but the feeling is quite mutual . Thanks also for having played my Violin Concerto so frequently in Pavlovsk.

I embrace you.

Your most devoted,
