Я нисколько на тебя не сердит, да и не за что. Об опере оттого ничего не писал, что неловко мне казалось об этом кому бы то ни было говорить. Тем не менее теперь это до такой степени сделалось известным, что я считаю излишним скрываться от тебя. Опера вполне кончена, но клавираусцуг ещё не сделан. Я просидел не вставая все лето, полагая, что срок конкурса 1-го января; оказывается, что нужно ждать решения до будущего ноября. Ты знаешь, что, как оказалось, право на печатание принадлежит дирекции Муз[ыкального] общ[ества], поэтому я ничего не могу тебе обещать. Да, впрочем, ещё получу ли я премию? Это ещё вопрос. Во всяком случае, говорить об этом преждевременно. Деньги от тебя я получил и очень сожалею, что уже теперь ничего не могу содрать с тебя. Я страшно запутался в своих счётах и готов был бы, как Митрофания, на всякие подлоги, лишь бы достать денег. Увы! кроме сомнительного получения премии, ничего не имею в виду.

Если я не ошибаюсь, за тобой теперь осталось очень немного. Прошу тебя послать мне на оставшиеся деньги 12 кабинетных я 12 маленьких моих карточек от Лоренса. Потрудись устроить это поскорее.
