Ваша симфония шла у нас две недели тому назад. Я прослушал её внимательно на трёх репетициях и на самом концерте и пришёл к тем заключениям, которые откровенно изложил в прилагаемом при сем отрывке из моего фельетона. Извините, что лезу к Вам с моими откровенностями; это происходит оттого, что я искренно люблю Вас и Ваши сочинения и испытываю потребность высказать Вам свои впечатления. Вы увидите из этой статейки, что финал не удался. Не обвиняйте в этом Рубинштейна, он самым добросовестным образом разучил симфонию; случился же этот казус (впрочем, не замеченный большинством публики) отчасти потому, что наш оркестр все же не такой первоклассный, как питерский, а отчасти по действительной трудности ритма в конце. Я лично в восторге от первых двух частей, и это мнение разделяют все музыканты. Публике понравилось больше всего скерцо, но вообще она осталась не особенно довольна, особенно если вспомнить фурор, который оба раза произвёл здесь «''Садко''».

Your symphony was performed here two weeks ago <ref name="note1"/>. I listened to it carefully at three rehearsals and at the concert itself, and came to the conclusions that I set out candidly in the excerpt of my review enclosed herewith <ref name="note2"/>. I apologise for bothering you with my candid views; I do so because I sincerely love you and your compositions and feel a need to share my impressions with you. You will see from this article that the finale was not a success. Do not blame [[Nikolay Rubinstein|Rubinstein]] for this; he studied the symphony most conscientiously. This happened (by the way, the majority of the audience did not notice) partly because our orchestra is not as first-rate as the [[Piter]] one, and partly due to the real difficulty of the rhythm at the end. Personally, I am enraptured by the first two movements, and this opinion is shared by all the musicians. The audience liked the scherzo most of all, but in general it was not particularly contented, particularly if you recall the furore that "''Sadko''" caused here both times <ref name="note3"/>.

I shake your hand warmly and ask you to convey my respects to ''[[Nadezhda Nikolayevna]]''.
