У меня к тебе просьба, или лучше сказать ''предложение'', ибо я хотел бы, чтобы ты отнёсся к тому, что я тебе сейчас скажу, нисколько не стесняясь нашими дружескими от ношениями, а совершенно как бы к обращению чужого человека. Я пишу теперь балет и должен всячески торопиться, ибо к 1-му сентябрю все должно быть готово. Работаю я с страшным напряжением и, должно быть, вследствие старости, утомляюсь до крайности. С ужасом думаю, что, написавши всю огромную партитуру, я ещё должен буду сделать двуручное переложение, в коем нуждается и балетмейстер, и Юргенсон, желающий с начала осени приступить к печатанию. Так вот, Саша, я бы был несказанно счастлив, если бы ты взялся сделать это переложение. Кроме Танеева и тебя я никому не могу довериться. Танеев имеет намерение все это лето посвятить сочинению, и его беспокоить мне слишком совестно. Но ты, может быть, согласился бы посвятить час или полтора каждый день этой работе. Конечно, не даром, а за гонорар, который ты сам назначишь ''Юргенсону''. Я бы попросил тебя сейчас же ответить мне ''да или нет'', причём, повторяю, прошу ни одной минуты не думать, что я обижусь, если ты откажешься. Я очень понимаю, что весёлого в этом ничего нет, хотя музыка более серьёзна, чем обыкновенно бывает в балетах. Целую ручки Веры, а тебя крепко обнимаю.

I find your programme excellent and I completely approve <ref name="note1"/>. Please write to [[Nápravník]] (addressed to the Directorate of Theatres), and I shall also write on my own account.

I have a request for you, or rather a ''suggestion'', because I should like you to respond to what I say to you now without the slightest awkwardness because of our friendly relations, but rather as if you were dealing with a stranger. At present I am writing a ballet <ref name="note2"/> and with all possible haste, because it must be ready by 1 September. I am working with terrible exertion and, surely as a consequence of old age, I am becoming tired in the extreme. I am horrified by the thought that, having written the whole enormous full score, I shall still have to make the four-hand arrangement, which is required by the balletmaster and [[Jurgenson]], who wants to set about printing it by the autumn. And so, [[Aleksandr Ziloti|Sasha]], I should be inexpressibly happy if you were to take it upon yourself do do this arrangement. Besides [[Taneyev]] and yourself I cannot entrust this to anyone. [[Taneyev]] intends to devote the whole summer to composing, and I am much too embarrassed to disturb him. But perhaps you would be willing to devote an hour or half-hour every day to this task. Not for nothing, of course, but rather for a fee which you yourself will settle with ''[[Jurgenson]]''. I would ask you to answer me at once ''yes or no'', and repeat that I ask you not to think for a single moment that I would be offended if you refuse <ref name="note3"/>. I understand very well that this is no fun, although the music is more serious than is usually the case in ballets. I kiss [[Vera Ziloti|Vera]]'s hands, and hug you warmly.
