I am very, very glad that you have devoted this summer to resting and treatment, and I foresee that this will benefit you enormously. I think that a year's leave would have been detrimental to you. You are much too accustomed to vigorous activity, and you would find it hard to live a whole year without conducting. But do you know what, dear friend? If during the course of next season you find that operatic activity is too exhausting for you, then why not decide to accept the offer of the [[Moscow]] directorate of the Musical society to be our kapellmeister, as from the season of 90-91? There are twelve concerts in the winter — this would not be tiring for you, and meanwhile you would have a job, and a good one at that, because you would help us out of the greatest difficulty. We are in need of a splendid kapellmeister with a grand name, and certainly a Russian one at that. No-one satisfies all these conditions as much as you. Of course, we could not reward your labours as the theatre rewards them — but then by comparison you will have a great deal of time for office work. My God, dear friend, give this some thought! And how happy we would be!

I received your most kind letter. {{centre|Дорогой друг Эдуард Францович!}}
