Сегодня, вернувшись домой из поездки в Киевскую губернию, получил я письмо от А. А. Герке, коим он приглашает меня прибыть в Петербург и участвовать в заседании Юбилейного комитета.

К сожалению, мне совершенно невозможно быть в этот день в Петербурге, ибо 15-го числа должно состояться первое представление оперы моей «''Онегин''» (с новой обстановкой) в Москве, и я уже давно дал слово присутствовать на репетиции и дирижировать самим представлением. 11-го числа должна состояться одна из оркестровых репетиций, коей управлять буду я, и это обстоятельство лишает меня возможности присутствовать на имеющем состояться заседании.

16-го числа я намерен отправиться в Петербург и остаться там несколько дней. Если Вашему высочеству угодно будет побеседовать со мной по поводу юбилейного празднества или назначить на один из дней, которые я проведу в Петербурге, ещё одно заседание комитета, то я вполне к услугам Вашим.

К началу общих спевок я вновь прибуду в Петербург и отдам себя в полное распоряжение комитета.

Верьте, Ваше высочество, что я глубоко ценю сделанную мне честь и горжусь приглашением меня к дирижированию на юбилейном концерте. При ложу все свои силы, все своё умение (к сожалению, быть может, не вполне достаточное для такого исключительного случая), чтобы быть на высоте возложенной на меня задачи.

Today, on my return home from a journey to [[Kiev]] province, I received a letter from [[Avgust Gerke|A. A. Gerke]], in which he invites me to come to [[Petersburg]] and to participate in a meeting of the Jubilee Committee.

Unfortunately, it is utterly impossible for me to be in [[Petersburg]] that day, because the first performance of my opera "''[[Onegin]]''" is due to take place on the 15th (in a new production) in [[Moscow]], and I have already given my word to attend rehearsals and to conduct the performance myself. One of the orchestral rehearsals must take place on the 11th, under my direction, and this circumstance deprives me of the opportunity of attending the meeting that is to be held.

On the 16th I am intending to leave for [[Petersburg]] and to stay there for several days. If it would be convenient for Your Highness to discuss the matter of the jubilee with time, or to organise another meeting of the committee for one of the days when I will be staying in [[Petersburg]], then I am entirely at your service

I shall be visiting [[Petersburg]] again for the start of the general rehearsals, and will place myself at the full disposal of the committee.

Be assured, Your Highness, that I deeply appreciate the honour afforded me, and I am proud to be invited to conduct at the jubilee concert. I shall employ all my strength and abilities (which are perhaps insufficient for such an exceptional event) in order to rise to the challenge set for me.
