	Прости, что я так поздно собрался поблагодарить тебя за, посылку денег. Я совсем теперь никуда не гожусь в качестве' корреспондента, ибо слишком заработался. Хотел я, милый дружище мой, вспомнить старину и пожить в Риме. Но так как мне немыслимо теперь жить в обыкновенной отдельной комнате,. разделённой тощей перегородкой от другой, где какие-нибудь. две паршивые англичанки упражняются на фортепиано или распевают свои пошлые гимны, — то я написал в три отеля, рекомендуемые Бедекером (Костанци не существует), спрашивая, могут ли меня поместить совершенно отдельно, дать отдельный стол в ''table d'hôte'' и т. д. На все письма получил ответы очень милые, но не удовлетворившие меня. Съезд иностранцев в Риме небывалый, все занято, и нужно ~~ту да~~ поехать и дня четыре побегать, чтобы что-нибудь найти. Ввиду нежелания тратить время и сознавая, что такого помещения, как здесь, я вряд. ли там найду, я решил пока остаться здесь и кончить переложение для фортепьяно моей оперы. Оперой я очень доволен покамест, и по временам мне кажется, что она всем понравится. Но авторы никогда не бывают справедливыми судьями над детищами своей фантазии. Увидим! 			Forgive me for being so late in writing to thank you for sending the money. I'm altogether a good-for-nothing correspondent now, because I've been working too hard. I wanted, my dear young friend, to remember the old days and to live in [[Rome]]. But since it's now unthinkable for me to live in an ordinary separate room, separated by a thin partition from another where two lousy Englishwomen are practising the piano or singing their vulgar hymns — then I wrote to three hotels recommended by Baedeker (the Costanzi doesn't feature), enquiring if they could accommodate me entirely separately, give me a separate table in the ''table d'hôte'' etc. I received very nice answers to all the letters, but they were not to my satisfaction. There's an unprecedented gathering of foreigners in [[Rome]]: everywhere is busy, and you need to go there and run around for four days to find something. Owing to my reluctance to waste time, and realising that I was unlikely to find accommodation like this, I decided to remain here for now and to finish the piano arrangement of my opera. I'm very pleased with the opera so far, and at times it seems to me that it will please everyone. But authors are never fair judges of the products of their imagination. We'll see!
