Спасибо тебе, милый мой Толя, за письмо; ты не так изменчив, как некая тифлисская аристократка! Что делать! Было время, что и меня любили, со слезами и причитаниями за границу провожали, томным взглядом на меня смотрели, и т. д, и т. д.

Не пойму я, кто же, наконец, у вас вместо ''Дондукова''? Или же он остаётся? Какие надежды на губернаторство? Ах, если бы Шувалов, — я бы ему сейчас письмо написал. Про себя сообщить интересного ничего не имею. Продолжаю работать над инструментовкой оперы и надеюсь не в далёком будущем её кончить. Из посетителей были у меня ''Юргенсон, Кашкин и Зилоти''. Я ''два'' раза пешком ходил в Майданово к ''Новичихе'' в винт играть. Изредка мне болтовня её доставляет удовольствие. Представь себе, что ''Майданово'' в моде; от желающих нанять там дачи отбою нет. ''Захарьин'' (по просьбе Новичихи, которая очаровала его) посылает к ней жить больных, говоря, что в Майданове чудный воздух. Если б у неё теперь было 20 дач, — то все было бы занято. Послезавтра сюда приезжает Коля Конради и, кажется, Модест, который сначала хотел приехать позднее, но теперь хочет ехать вместе с Колей. Они останутся не долго и едут в ''Гранкино''. Я не тронусь отсюда, пока не кончу вполне оперы и эскизов ''секстета'' для струнных, который собираюсь написать.

{{und2|Перестал пить водку}} и не нарадуюсь на себя. Так хорошо себя чувствую без этой обожаемой отравы. Я убеждён, что если бы не пил совсем водки, то куда ещё лучше было бы моё здоровье.

Весьма одобряю твой план поездки в Каменку, — но мечтаю из Каменки пробраться в Нижний и ехать к вам опять Волгой и морем. Впрочем, если ты наверно приедешь, можно изменить план.
