6-го июля я тщетно ожидал тебя на вокзале с завтраком. Неужели ты совершенно позабыл, что хотел завтракать со мной?

Побывал у Фигнера. Он от партии своей в восторге. Кашкин ездил со мной, но на возвратном пути застрял в Туле у Аносова. Приехал домой 3-го дня вечером. Вчера получил твоё письмо и предисловие. Посылаю его назад с поправками. Заглавия никакого не нужно; подпись ''М. Ч''. ''Я желаю получить корректуру либретто; пожалуйста, пришли мне её сейчас же''. Скоро приедет Кашкин и Ларош, мы вместе все про смотрим и обойдёмся без Модеста.

«''Гамлета''» я вчера послал. Если будешь гравировать голоса, то нужно предварительно сверить их с печатной партитурой. В ней, сравнительно с голосами, много изменений. Экземпляр партитуры, как только будет она готова, нужно послать к ''Григу'', но так как я адреса его не знаю, то потрудись адресовать доктору ''Абрагаму'' (Peters) для пересылки Григу.

''Гравёров'' я наградил очень умеренно; я это делаю очень редко (после «''Чародейки''» ни разу) и нахожу, что дать за хорошую работу справедлив распределённую награду (по 10 ко[пеек] с доски) таким труженикам — вовсе не дурно, и, извини, буду делать это и впредь, но очень редко. Отчего ты думаешь, что гравёров может испортить несколько рублей, полученных раз в три года за хорошую работу? А они замечательно скоро и хорошо награвировали «''Пиковую даму''». Ужасно досадно, что в «''Гамлете''» ударные на строчках!

''Юбилея'' никакого нет и не будет. Я согласен лучше застрелиться, чем быть предметом опошлившихся до мерзости юбилейных оваций. С вопросом о юбилее ко мне уже не раз обращались. Если ещё станут приставать, буду в газетах объявлять, что не хочу. ''Озерки'' с юбилеем ничего общего не имеют; да я, кажется, и не поеду; узнавши, что ''Цет Иванову'' устроил концерт и что эта гадина там махала палкой, — я получил отвращение к Озеркам.

On 6th July I waited for you in vain at the station with lunch. Had you completely forgotten that you wanted to have lunch with me?

I visited [[Figner]]. He's delighted with his part. [[Kashkin]] went with me, but on the way back he became stuck at Anosov's in Tula. I arrived home on the evening of the 3rd. Yesterday I received your letter and foreword. I'm sending it back with alterations. The title is unnecessary; the signature is ''M. T.''. ''I want to have the proofs of the libretto; please, send it to me forthwith''. [[Kashkin]] and [[Laroche]] are arriving soon; we are reviewing everything together and can manage without [[Modest]].

Yesterday I received ''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]''. If you are going to engrave the parts, then you must first check them against the printed score. Comparing it to the parts, there are many alterations. As soon as it's ready, a copy of the score must be sent to ''[[Grieg]]'', but since I don't know his address, kindly send it to Doctor ''Abraham'' (Peters) for forwarding to [[Grieg]].

I rewarded the ''engravers'' very modestly; I do this only very rarely (not at all after "''[[The Enchantress]]''") and I consider it fair to give an equitable reward (10 kopeks per plate) to the workers for their fine efforts; this is no bad thing at all, and, I'm sorry, I shall do so in future, but very rarely. How could you think that the engravers can be spoilt by receiving a few rubles for good work every three years? And they engraved "''[[The Queen of Spades]]''" remarkably quickly and well. It's terribly annoying that in "''[[Hamlet (overture-fantasia)|Hamlet]]''" the percussion are given on staves!

There is no ''jubilee'' whatsoever, and there will be none. I'd sooner shoot myself than to be subjected to jubilee ovations that are vulgar to the point of abomination. I've already been approached more than once regarding the matter of the jubilee. If they insist on pestering me, I'll be announcing in the newspapers that I don't want it. The ''Ozerki'' in general has nothing to do with the jubilee; if I think it does, then I will not go; when I learned that ''Zet Ivanov'' had organised a concert and that this viper was waving a baton there, I developed a loathing for the Ozerki.
