Милая Катерина Ивановна! Я ужасно Вам благодарен за хлопоты о при искании мне квартиры. Комбинация, о которой Вы пишете (генеральская обстановка), мне нравится. Дело это и вообще решительную власть — брать или не брать мне ту или другую квартиру — я передаю на распоряжение Ваше и Модеста. Если Вы вместе решите что-либо, то пусть Модест возьмёт у О. И. Юргенсона деньги на задаток. Во всяком случае, я протестовать не буду.

Живу здесь уже неделю. Устроился я очень удобно и хорошо, пока ещё визитов не делал и потому время проводил приятно, но, увы, с завтрашнего [дня] начинаю вести светскую жизнь. Это в значительной степени отравит удовольствие пребывания в Тифлисе. Пробовал заниматься, но что-то не клеится, и, должно быть, ничего здесь из-под плодовитого пера моего не выйдет.

Бедный Маня! Отчего у него нарыв?
