Мне перед тобой очень совестно. Я не только не пишу тебе, ни и не исполняю своих обещаний. Обещал я тебе ''ковёр'' купить — и не купил! Обещал портрет — и не послал впрочем, в очень скором времени этот портрет ты получишь. Что касается ''ковра'', то, представь, я имел твёрдое намерение сделать это 1-го декабря, — но не тут-то было! Деньги разлетелись, как дым. Теперь же, ввиду путешествия, я до того стал жаден, что вытянуть из себя на постороннюю цель деньги мне так же трудно, как отрезать палец.

Милый Толенька! Все это время я просто погибал от наплыва разных работ. В том числе с неимоверным рвением я полемизировал в газетах по поводу ''Славянского''. Здесь есть газета «''Соврем[енные] известия''», которая целые передовые статьи посвящает обругиванию твоего милого братца, который, как ты справедливо замечаешь, позабыл бессовестно Толиньку и ему не пишет!

Но что же делать? Если б ты только знал, до чего после писания статей, инструментовки балета, консерваторских классов и т. д. и т. д. мне трудно найти время, чтобы как следует побеседовать с тобой. Но чем меньше я тебе пишу, тем ''больше'' я тебя ''люблю'', мой милый и самый лучший из всех товарищей прокуроров!
