Je viens de recevoir ta bonne lettre. Pour le concert projeté, voici ce qu'il faut d'abord prendre en considération. Je suis invité pour l'inauguration d'une grande salle de concerts à ''New-York''. Je devrai y diriger dans trois concerts et, selon ma promesse je dois déj a me trouver à ''New-York'' le 24 Avril ; par conséquent il faut partir du Havre pas plus tard que le 12 Avril. Donc, le concert de Paris ne peut avoir lieu au plus tard que le 10 Avril.

Ou bien, si tu le préfère je puis de ''New-York'' revenir à Paris, mais alors ce n'est que vers le 25 Mai, que je pourrai être à Paris et commencer les répétitions. Je crois que c'est une saison trop avancée pour notre concert. Dans tous les cas je préférerais que ce soit avant l'Amérique car, qui sait, — j'y serai peut-être retenu par une proposition avantageuse?

Il s'en suit {{sic|que avant|qu'avant}} tout il faut s'assurer d'une salle de concert, celle que tu voudras, pour le 7, 8, 9 ou la Avril. Pour le programme il faut une grande symphonie ou une suite (je préférerais la troisième dont tu connais les variations seulement) et un {{sic|poême|poème}} symphonique («La Tempête», «{{sic|Franceska|Francesca}}») à ton choix ; puis des airs de ballet (je préférerais ceux du «Voyewode», oeuvre de jeunesse que j'ai revue et corrigée en été). Ensuite il faut du chant et des solistes. Mais pour le choix des solis à mettre dans le programme, je m'en remets à toi.

Voila tout ce que j'ai à dire de mon coté. Quant à l'orchestre je préférerais celui de ''Colonne'', car je le connais ; mais encore je te donne carte blanche sous ce rapport. Colonne sera bientôt, à Moscou, mais je ne sais pas si je le verrai, personne ne m'ayant adressé la prière d'assister à ce concert. Dans trois jours je vais à Pétersbourg et j'y resterai jusqu'au 16 Février (style français). Si tu m'écris à Pétersbourg, adresse ''Moïka Hôtel de Russie''. Ensuite je reviens ici.

I have just received your kind letter. Regarding the projected concert, here is something else to take into consideration first. I've been invited to the inauguration of a large concert hall in ''[[New York]]''. I will have to conduct three concerts there, and I must promise to be in ''[[New York]]'' by 24 April; consequently, I must leave [[Le Havre]] no later than 12 April. Therefore, the [[Paris]] concert cannot take place any later than 10 April.

Or if you prefer, I can come to [[Paris]] on my way back from ''[[New York]]'', but then it will only be around 25 May that I can be in [[Paris]] and begin rehearsals. I think this is too late in the season for our concert. In any case I would prefer it to be before America because, who knows — I might possibly be detained by an advantageous offer?

From the above it follows that we must secure a concert hall, wherever you wish, for the 7, 8 or 9 of April. The programme must have a big symphony or a suite (I would prefer the [[Suite No. 3|third]], of which you only know the variations), and a symphonic poem ("[[The Tempest]]", "[[Francesca]]") of your choice; then some airs de ballet (I would prefer those from "[[The Voyevoda (opera)|The Voyevoda]]", a youthful work that I reviewed and corrected in the summer). Furthermore there needs to be some singers and soloists. But as for the choice of soloists to include in the programme, then I leave this up to you.

This is everything I have to say on my account. As for the orchestra I would prefer ''[[Colonne]]'''s, because I'm familiar with it; but again, I still give you carte blanche in this respect. [[Colonne]] will be in [[Moscow]] soon, but I don't know if I'll see him, as no-one has yet invited me to attend that concert. In three days I'm going to [[Petersburg]], and I'll be staying there until 16 February (French style). If you write to me in [[Petersburg]], address it to ''Moïka Hôtel de Russie''. Then I'm returning here.
