Why should I grovel to the theatre, if the person whom the Directorate has to please, as its patron, disapproves of my latest and most loved offspring? Представь себе, голубчик, что я ежедневно в Петербурге давал себе слово спросить Модеста насчёт ''Улыбышева'', — и так и забыл. У меня там голова кругом холила. Ещё я страшно перед тобой виноват, что, потерявши твоё последнее письмо, вероятно, лишаю тебя ответа на какие-нибудь деловые вопросы. Пожалуйста, припомни, что ты в последнем письме меня спрашивал?

Голоса «''Воеводы''» у меня, и я их сегодня или завтра тебе посылаю; при них и партитура с исправлениями.

Сейчас я написал ''Всеволожскому'' большое письмо по поводу пакости, сделанной с «''Пиковой дамой''». Гордость и страх, как бы не вообразили, что я сокрушаюсь о поспектакльной плате, мешали мне начинать в Петербурге разговор об этом; сами же театральные администраторы избегали со мной говорить об этом деле. Зато я письменно излил все, что накопилось в сердце. Между прочим я объявил Всеволожскому, что после афронта, нанесённого мне теперь, — я имею основание думать, что и с будущими моими сочинениями будут так поступать, а потому только тогда примусь за заказываемые мне к будущему сезону одноактную оперу и балет, когда получу официальное удостоверение, что ''государь'' этого желает. Нужно тебе сказать, что государь к «Пиковой даме» очень холоден. Он теперь увлечён ''Решками'' и бывает в ''театре'', только когда они поют ''по-французски в русской'' опере.
