Голубчики мои Толя и Паня! Вчера приехал в Нью-Йорк. Плаванье была благополучное, но была и сильная буря. Ехал я под тяжёлым впечатлением и с страшной тоской в душе. Вёл подробный дневник, который послал Модесту с тем, чтобы он прочёл сам, дал прочесть всем, кто хочет из близких в Петербурге, а потом послал к вам. Несмотря на отвратительное состояние духа, я совершенно здоров. Теперь все мой помыслы устремлены к тому, как бы поскорее отделаться и уехать домой. К тому времени, когда эта письма дойдет до вас, я, вероятно, буду уже на пути в Россию. Встретила меня здесь очень почетно и радушно; сегодня уже во всех газетах сведения о моем прибытии и портрет. Оказывается, что я в Америке горазда более известен, чем в Европе. Я здесь важная птица.

Нью-Йорк очень красивый и очень оригинальный город. На главной улице одноэтажные домишки чередуются с домами в 9 этажей. Все уже зелено, и зелени много: эта радует взоры. Пока ещё ни у кого не был и, кроме встретивших меня 4 очень ласковых и учтивых господ и одной дамы, никого не видел. Вспоминаю, как в это же время 2 года тому назад я ехал из Марселя в Батум, и при этом плачу. Я вообще ужасный стал плакса. Впрочем, это все пустяки; потом буду вспоминать с удовольствием. Итак, из моего дневника вы узнаете подробности путешествия. А покамест обнимаю и целую крепко. Тату нежно целую. Кокодесу поклон и поцелуй.

My golubchiks [[Tolya]] and [[Panya]]! Yesterday I arrived in [[New York]]. The voyage was satisfactory, even though there was a fierce storm. I travelled with miserable apprehension and a terrible sadness in my soul. I kept a detailed diary, which I've sent to [[Modest]] <ref name="note1"/>, so that he can read it himself, and give to all the relatives in [[Petersburg]] who want to read it, and then send it to you. Despite my horrible mood, I'm completely healthy. Now all my thoughts are concentrated on how I might extricate myself as soon as possible and leave for home. By the time this letter reaches you I shall probably already be on my way to Russia. My reception here has been very respectful and welcoming; a portrait and details of my arrival are already in today's newspapers. It turns out that in American I am far better known than in Europe. [[New York]] is a very beautiful and very original city. On the main street single-storey cottages alternate with houses of 9 floors. Everything is already green, and there's so much greenery.
