Oh, [[Modya]], how envious I became when you mentioned in your letter about the trees blossoming and the violets being sold on every corner! It's been so abominable here. The thaw started ahead of time, and not in the way I like, i.e. all at once, but somehow in tiny amounts. I finished my quartet, begun in [[Paris]], and yesterday it was performed for the first time at a soiréé at [[Nikolay Rubinstein\|Rubinstein]]'s. It was much praised — but I'm not altogether satisfied. It seems to me that I'm rather written out — I'm starting to repeat myself and can't come up with anything new. Has my song really been sung, and I can't go any further? Anyway, I'll try not to write anything for a while in order to gather my strength. I'm still busy with the endless proofreading of "[[Vakula]]", which will be published in a couple of weeks. The other day we had an interesting concert by [[Nikolay Rubinstein\|Rubinstein]], who was awarded 26 thousand rubles that evening. If you add his fee of 4000 rubles, then you'll have the mouth-watering sum of 30,000 rubles. Generally, this Lent isn't full of interesting concerts, due to the fact that the theatres are restricted. By the way, do you have any Russian newspapers, and do you follow what's happening in Russia? You don't write anything to me about what you intend to do in the near future and whether you'll soon be returning to your fatherland. I cannot help but rejoice that you've finally decided to accept [[Konradi]]'s offer, just like the fact that you rejected Meshchersky's companionship. Lord, how you would repent (i.e. not the Lord, but you, [[Modya]]) if you'd been imprudent enough to accept his offer, however gracious and friendly. Твои письма для меня большое удовольствие. Ты не поверишь, как мне интересны подробности твоего житья-бытья в Лионе. Я просто захлёбывался от удовольствия, читая описание шествия семинаристов в собор, и как я понимаю хорошо твои ощущения. Положим, что в ''шлейфе'' для простого смертного не заключается ничего особенно; но Боже мой, сколько для нас с тобой знаменательного и обаятельного в этой маленькой подробности. Наконец, твоё описание четы ''Вохенхублер'' есть маленький литературный chef d'oeuvre, особенно когда дело доходит до целования грязных ручек. Но довольно льстить. Ах, Модя, как мне сделалось завидно, когда ты упомянул в письме о распускании деревьев и о фиалках, продаваемых на всех углах! У нас здесь такая мерзость. Оттепель началась раньше времени и не так, как я люблю, т. е. сразу, а как-то по крошечным порциям. Я окончил свой квартет, начатый в Париже, и вчера в первый раз он был исполнен на вечере у Рубинштейна. Очень хвалят, — но я не совсем доволен. Мне кажется, что я немножко исписался, начинаю повторять себя и не могу выдумать ничего нового. Неужели моя песенка уже спета и дальше я не пойду? Весьма грустно. Впрочем, попробую несколько времени не писать ничего, дабы собраться с силами. Все ещё вожусь с бесконечными корректурами «Вакулы», который недели через две выйдет из печати. Был у нас на днях интересный концерт Рубинштейна, которому поднесли в этот вечер 26 тысяч рублей. При совокупи к этому 4000 р[ублей] сбору, — и ты получишь аппетитную сумму в 30 000 рублей. Вообще же нынешний великий пост не обилен интересными концертами вследствие того обстоятельства, что разрешены театры. Кстати, имеешь ли ты какие-нибудь русские газеты и следишь ли за тем, что происходит в России? Ты мне ничего не пишешь о том, что намерен делать в ближайшем будущем и скоро ли вернёшься в отечество. Что ты решаешься принять окончательно предложение Конради, этому я не могу не радоваться, точно так же, как и тому, что ты отклонил сопутствие Мещёрскому. Господи! как бы ты (т. е., не господь, а ты, Модя) раскаялся, если б имел неосторожность принять его предложение, впрочем, любезное и дружеское. Из твоих московских приятелей все живут по-старому. Ник[олай] Львович только что-то как будто клонится к упадку. Раздражителен сделался до чрезвычайности. Со всеми почти перессорился. Ник[олай] Дм[итриевич] с нетерпением ожидает от тебя письма. Он теперь покоен, так как его мерзавец Алёшка уехал в деревню. Шиловский ездил в Петербург слушать «Анжело», познакомился с ''Кюи'' и только и бредит им.
