Я ужасно огорчён, что не имею возможности исполнить желаний Ваших ''Mise en scène'' «''Пиковая дамы''». Я только что послал в Прагу, откуда она, по миновании надобности, возвратится не ранее как недели через три. Не поздно ли тогда будет посылать её? К величайшему сожалению, другого экземпляра ''mise en scène'' нет. Между тем без неё Вам трудно будет обойтись, — по крайней мере в Москве я не знаю, что бы было, если б не существовал превосходный труд ''Палечека'' (автора петербургской mise en scène). Ввиду этого не найдёте ли Вы удобным отложить постановку «''Пиковой дамы''» по будущий сезон? К тому же и моё присутствие могло бы оказать пользу делу, — а я и в ноябре, и в декабре быть у Вас в Харькове затрудняюсь обещать. В конце ноября у меня репетиции большого концерта в пользу голодающих, в Петербурге, а вскоре после того я должен ехать в Гамбург и Прагу на постановку моей оперы. Быть может, в половине декабря я бы и мог побывать в Харькове, — но пока не вполне в этом уверен. Обстоятельства, от коих это зависит, разъяснятся вскоре, и тогда я извещу Вас.

За ''Борисоглебского'' очень Вам благодарен. Он недели через две к Вам явится.

I am awfully upset not to have the opportunity to fulfil your request for the ''Mise en scène'' in "''[[The Queen of Spades]]''". I have only just sent it to [[Prague]], from where, once it is no longer required, it will be returned to me after no less than three weeks. Would it then be too late to send it? It is the greatest misfortune that there are no other copies of the ''mise en scène''. In the meantime it will be difficult to do without it — at least in [[Moscow]] I do not know what would have happened if ''[[Paleček]]'s'' excellent work had not existed (he was the author of the [[Petersburg]] mise en scène). In view of this, would you not find it convenient to postpone the production of "''[[The Queen of Spades]]''" until the next season? Furthermore, my presence could benefit the cause — and it is difficult for me to promise to be with you in [[Kharkov]] in either November or December. At the end of November I have a big concert in aid of famine relief, in [[Petersburg]], and soon afterwards I have to go to [[Hamburg]] and [[Prague]] for productions of my operas. I could perhaps visit [[Kharkov]] in the middle of December — but I cannot be entirely sure of this. The circumstances on which this depends will soon become clear, and then I shall notify you.
