I don't know the judicial hierarchy, but, in short, wouldn't be better to serve ''Themis'' again? She is somewhat nobler. 	Милый друг Толя! Получил сейчас твоё подробное письмо о петербургских мытарствах. Я нисколько не расположен обвинять тебя в нетерпении и слабохарактерности, ибо и сам нетерпелив в вопросе о твоём ''вице-губернаторстве'' и живо принимаю к сердцу твои теперешние неудачи. На спрашивается, как лучше поступать, чтобы дело пошло хорошо. Конечно, самое благоразумное была бы плюнуть, философски-презрительно относиться к служебной деятельности, т. е. делать своё дело, нисколько не заботясь а повышении. На ввиду твоего характера и розни во взглядах с ''Шаховским'' это очень трудно. Па зрелом размышлении я прихожу к заключению, что, может быть, самое лучшее было бы перейти опять в ''Судебное ведомство''. Нельзя ли тебе хоть опять прокурором в Тифлисе сделаться? Я бы и этому обрадовался. Впрочем, тут действует на меня страстное желание, чтобы ты возвратился на Кавказ. Увы, — там Смиттен, и это опять невозможно.
