Возвращаю тебе копию с Бесселевского контракта. Откуда ''Фукс'' мог взять, что я оспариваю права ''Бесселя'' на «Опричника»? Я никогда этого и не думал. Конечно, ''Бессель'' сделал свойственную его натуре ''подлость'', подведя дело так, что я подписал это дурацкое условие, — но спорить я не собирался и не собираюсь. У меня есть смутное предположение когда-нибудь 2/3 «''Опричника''» сделать заново и тогда эту оперу в новом виде отдать другому, — но Бог знает, когда это случится. Спорю же я о «''Ромео и Юлии''» вот уже очень давно и, к сожалению, не вижу в действиях ''Фукса'' ничего способного ускорить разрешение вопроса. Отчего это ничего не выходит из этого дела? Не понимаю.<br />

I'm returning to you the copy of the contract with [[Bessel]] <ref name="note1"/>. Where did ''Fuchs'' get the idea that I'm disputing ''[[Bessel]]'s'' rights to "[[The Oprichnik]]"? It never crossed my mind. Certainly ''[[Bessel]]'' displayed his characteristic ''skulduggery'', having connived things so that I signed my name to this ridiculous condition, but I wasn't about to argue the point, and do not intend to. I have a vague notion of re-doing around two-thirds of "''[[The Oprichnik]]''", and then offering the opera in a new form to someone else—but God knows when this might happen. I could say the same about "''[[Romeo and Juliet]]''", but that's also water under the bridge, unfortunately, and I don't see how ''Fuchs''{{'}} actions are capable of quickly resolving the matter. Why does nothing come of this? I don't understand.<br />

In 1872 Tchaikovsky had granted [[Bessel]] the rights to publish the music and its libretto, but now he was reluctant to allow this old opera to be revived on the stage.</ref><br />
