Mon bien cher et excellent ami! Vous ne sauriez croire combien Votre bonne lettre m'a fait plaisir, — car ne recevant de Vous aucune nouvelle, j'avais cru un moment que Vous aviez renoncé à monter «''Iolanthe''» sur Votre Théâtre. ''Certainement'' je viendrai pour les répétitions et le premier spectacle. J'accepte aussi avec le plus grand plaisir l'invitation de ''Schwerin''.

Maintenant voici quelques mots sur une ''coupure'' que nous avons fait ici dans «''Iolanthe''», qu'on étudie en ce moment au Théâtre Impérial. Il y a après l'arrivée de ''Almérik'' une longue scène où ''Bertrand'' lui raconte comment et pourquoi la fille du ''Roi René'' vit isolée. Cette scène est un peu longue et ennuyeuse et j'ai fait {{und2|une grande coupure}} que Vous comprendrez mieux quand Vous aurez parcouru le ''Clavierauszug'' russe que je Vous envoie en même temps que cette lettre. Mais, à cause de la coupure il faudra un tout petit peu changer les paroles dans le recitatif du Roi, — j'indiquerai dans quel endroit.

Mon cher ami, ne pourriez Vous pas envoyer Votre régisseur en chef ou son adjoint à Petersbourg pour assister à la premiere de «''Iolanthe''» ici? Ce serait bien utile pour la mise en scène de ''Hambourg''. {{und2|Je prends sur moi très volontiers les frais du voyage}}. Veuillez me donner un mot de réponse. Je resterai ici jusqu'à la premiere {{sic|représantation|représentation}}, qui aura lieu vers le 7/19 Décembre. Je Vous télegraphierai le jour, quand il sera fixé.

My very dear and good friend! You cannot imagine how happy your kind letter <ref name="note1"/> has made me — because since I had not received any further word from you, I thought for a moment that you had abandoned the staging of "''[[Iolanta]]''" in your theatre. I shall ''certainly'' come for the rehearsals and the first production. I also accept with great pleasure the invitation to ''Schwerin''.

Now here are a few words during the ''breaks'' we are having in "''[[Iolanta]]''", which is currently in rehearsal here at the Imperial Theatre. After the arrival of ''Almerik'' there is a long scene where ''Bertrand'' explains to him how and why ''King René''{{'}}s daughter lives in isolation. This scene is somewhat long and tedious, and I made {{und2|a large cut}} that you will better understand once you have studied the Russian ''vocal-piano reduction'' that I am sending you together with this letter. Because the cut will require a slight change to the words of the King's recitatives, I shall mark where this occurs.

My dear friend, could you not send your principal director or his deputy to attend the premiere "''[[Iolanta]]''" here? This would be most useful for the staging in ''[[Hamburg]]''. {{und2|I would very gladly take on the travel expenses myself}}. Please send me a word in reply.
