Приехавши сюда третьего дня, нашёл твоё письмо, а сейчас получил другое. Бесконечно тебе благодарен. Тебе, может быть, уже известно, как я неистово тосковал в первое время путешествия. В Монбельяре, где я увидел после 44-летней разлуки M[ademois]elle Fanny, мне было и отрадно, и в то же время жутко, — но это я подробно расскажу при свидании. Провёл затем несколько дней в Париже, довольно сносно. Но и там, и теперь здесь у меня на сердце очень тяжело и я даю себе внутренно ''клятву'' никогда больше не ездить за границу иначе как для своего удовольствия и с кем-нибудь из своих. Вчера у меня была здесь репетиция, завтра ещё одна, а послезавтра репетиция утром и концерт вечером. На следующий день, т. е. нашего 3-го числа, я еду в Париж на 3 дня, а потом в Одессу, куда ты мне и пиши, ради Бога, ''адресуя в гостиницу «Лондон»''. В Париже 2 раза виделся с Эммой. Она, по-видимому, хорошо и весело себя чувствует. Адрес её 21, ''Rue Condorcet''. Как мне усладительно читать подробности, которые ты сообщаешь, и как хочется быть посреди вас!

А насчёт печальной стороны твоей жизни интересно будет побеседовать при свидании.

Бедная, милая Аня — очень тебе сочувствую. Тысячу нежных приветствий Люб[ови] Петр[овне] и детям. П[етру] И{вановичу] кланяюсь.

Сейчас у меня начнётся приём и суета. Ох, тоска!!!!

Coming here on the third I found your letter, and now I received another. I'm endlessly grateful to you. You might already know how intense my melancholy was at the beginning of the trip. At [[Montbéliard]], where I saw Mademoiselle [[Fanny Dürbach|Fanny]] after 44 years, I had a satisfying and terrifying feeling at the same time — but I shall tell you about it in detail when we meet. I spent a few days in [[Paris]] after that, it was relatively tolerable. But even there and now here my heart is aching and I made a ''vow'' to myself never to go abroad again unless it's for my own pleasure or with somebody I know. I had a rehearsal here yesterday, tomorrow another one and the day after tomorrow there is a rehearsal in the morning and a concert in the evening. The next day, on our 3rd, I'm going to [[Paris]] for three days and then to [[Odessa]], where you must please write to me, for God's sake, at the ''"London" hotel address''. I met [[Emma]] twice in [[Paris]]. It looks like she is feeling well and joyful. Her address is 21 ''Rue Condorcet''. It was very delightful for me to read the details you are telling me about — how much I would love to be amongst you!

And as regards the sad aspects of your life, it would be interesting to talk when we meet.
