It's with a sort of delectable pleasure that I write this to you. The idea that this piece of paper will be in your hands, at home, fills me with joy and brings tears to my eyes. Isn't it curious that I voluntarily subject myself to this torture? Why the hell am I doing all this? Several times yesterday during my journey I made up my mind to give it all up and turn around, but somehow it seemed shameful to return empty handed. Yesterday my tortures reached the point where my sleep and appetite vanished, which very rarely happens. I'm suffering not only from an anguish which cannot be expressed in words (in my new symphony there is a place which I think expresses it very well), but also from a hatred of strangers, some vague anxiety, and God knows what else. Physically this manifests itself as a pain in the lower abdomen, and a neuralgia and weakness in the legs. Well this is certainly the last time in my life I am doing this. I won't go anywhere, unless it's for a huge amount of money and for no more than three days. And to think I'm stuck here for another 2 weeks! That seems like an eternity to me!!! I arrived here this morning, taking the shortest route through Cologne and Ostend. The crossing took 3 hours over a calm sea. With difficulty I found my hotel; it's now the season and all the hotels are overcrowded. London is a loathsome city: I can't find anything here; there are no pissoirs and no money exchanges, and I could barely find a hat to fit my head!!! On my arrival at the hotel to my surprise I was terribly glad to be met by the Parisian pianist Dièmer, who lives here now! He is after all an old acquaintance, and very well disposed towards me. But as a consequence, almost as soon as I had arrived I was obliged to go to his recital, i.e. a daytime concert . Saint-Saëns is involved in the same concert that I am conducting . Afterwards I went to see the organiser to arrange the time for rehearsals. Now I'm hastening to write to you. I've already forgotten the vacillations I wrote to you about from Berlin. Now all my ambitions are directed towards Grankino, and if you don't change your mind, I'll go from Cambridge to Paris for a meeting with Ziloti, to Itter (which I'm looking forward to), and then I'd expect to be at Grankino around the 15th of the month. Coming home from Cambridge, after all the excitement is over, I shall not be miserable.

My joy, please write to me right away, even if it's just a few words. I still have to write to Anatoly. Hugging you to death. Tell Uncle Modya that I'm think of him with a heavy heart, because he knows just how I feel, although to a lesser extent. Anyway I forget that firstly, he's younger, and secondly, he jaunts around for his own enjoyment. I kiss everyone: Kolya, Rudy , Sanya, the Divine One and Volodya.
