Your nice letter afforded me the sweetest pleasure, both by the good news that it contains, and by the expressions of your personal sympathy for my works. If I am not mistaken, you completed your course at the Petersburg Conservatory, where you were to be found in my colleague Kross's classes. I have heard the most flattering reviews of your talent, and I am most pleased that such <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">a sympathetic </del>young artist writes to me with such warm compassion about the fate of my works in a foreign land. I confess that it pleases me far more than "Liszt's beaming face", of which you wrote. Despite all his genius, despite all his enormous service to the arts, I know very well that Liszt is an insincere fellow and something of a play-actor. He admires everything indiscriminately, and, for example, I know for a fact that he has spoken enthusiastically about Musorgskys music; to share anyone's attention and sympathy alongside Musorgsky is deeply unflattering to me, and I do not believe it was possible to like Musorgsky's music and at the same time to like mine. As regards the fact that the general public found parts of my symphony pleasing, then I am utterly delighted, since I have not generally been spoiled by enthusiasm, especially from a foreign audience. This winter my overture "Romeo and Juliet" was solemnly hissed; the same thing happened with this same overture on another occasion in Paris.

Gracious Madam!

Gracious Madam! Your nice letter afforded me the sweetest pleasure, both by the good news that it contains, and by the expressions of your personal sympathy for my works. If I am not mistaken, you completed your course at the Petersburg Conservatory, where you were to be found my colleague Kross's classes. I have heard the most flattering reviews of your talent, and I am most pleased that such a sympathetic young artist writes to me with such warm compassion about the fate of my works in a foreign land.

I will be very glad sometime to express my sincere thanks and sympathy to you in person.

Your sincerely devoted,
